Great vintage, great producer, great price! Of the “big three” white wine villages of the Côte de Beaune (Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet; Meursault), Chassagne is the only one still producing a significant percentage (around 40%) of red wines. That percentage used to be higher, in fact, and the reasons for converting Pinot Noir over to Chardonnay in the village are largely commercial—the greatest Chardonnay vineyards in the world are here and in adjacent Puligny, so it’s no wonder many growers made the switch. Nevertheless, there are many lush and delicious red Burgundies to be had from this village, and Caroline Morey’s has emerged as one of the most sought-after in the region. Caroline is the eldest daughter of legendary Chassagne-Montrachet vigneron Jean-Marc Morey; after he retired in 2014, she acquired about 7 hectares of the family’s vineyards in the region to start her own label. She makes several red wines in Chassagne and in Santenay, favoring a bright, tangy style incorporating some “whole cluster” grapes in the fermentation. Perfumed, serious, great-value red Burgundy!
