Domaine Frédéric Esmonin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes - Les Jouises

The well situated lieu-dit of Les Jouises is perched above the famous village of Gevrey-Chambertin just below the Premier Cru of Perriere and is a stone’s throw from the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. An insider wine for anyone who seeks the unrivaled terroir of the great appellation for a village-level price, this wine offers concentration of fruit, from the 60-100 year old vines, as well as the clay, limestone and marl soils that have made Gevrey-Chambertin a favorite of kings and emperors since before Napoleon began his love affair with this particular terroir. A rare example of a deal in Burgundy, Frédéric Esmonin’s stunning Les Jouises delivers all the lineage, complexity and powerful elegance we all crave in a great Gevrey-Chambertin in a softer more approachable style that will really hit a great spot in just a few more years of aging.

The Esmonin family began domaine-bottling their own wine in 1988. In the past, André and Michelle Esmonin sold their fruit to Drouhin, Jadot and Leroy. Frédéric, along with his parents, farm their vineyards lutte raissonée and have eschewed the use of herbicides for over a decade. The quality of their wines has only continued to rise; Frédéric’s dedication to the health of the soil and astute winemaking deliver a Gevrey-Chambertin of classic beauty. This particular wine is entirely destemmed and cold macerated for 4-5 days prior to fermentation. The wine is aged in a combination of neutral and new French oak, which is subtly well-integrated, allowing the purity of fruit and terroir to shine.

This wine exhibits an incredibly deep dark ruby core with pink reflections on the rim. The perfumed and savory nose leads with aromatics of wild brush, dried wild mushrooms, dew-kissed forest floor, damp cellar and dried roses over freshly picked redcurrant, red plum and dried strawberry, which is enhanced by distinct crushed black earth and a touch of baking spices. The body of this wine is a moderated medium-plus and reveals soft, velveteen tannins with complex flavors that confirm the nose and persist through a lingering, beautiful finish. Although this wine is delicious now, it will evolve to an even more exquisite place in the next 4-5 years, so I would highly advise putting this down. Decant this wine for 60+ minutes to enjoy the soft tannins and focused complexity of aromatics. Serve at 60-65 degrees in large Burgundy stems with a classic rendition of Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourguignon.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
