Joseph Roty, Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos Prieur Bas

I recently opened a bottle of this 2007 Gevrey-Chambertin and instantly reserved all that was left in the US after I saw the quality. I have tasted this vintage several times over the last few years, and only now is it finally at a stage of incredible drinkability. The 2007 vintage is beginning to shine, and if you pay attention to how expensive Red Burgundy has become over the last several years, you know that this wine is an incredible value. Since 1710, Joseph’s Roty’s family has been making truly celebrated Red Burgundy in Gevrey-Chambertin; farming the same exact vineyards for more than 300 years, the family has managed to care for their vines and handcraft wines of exceptional quality—without sharing much about their techniques or practices. As the wines have gained mass critical acclaim and achieved true collector’s status, many have come to believe that the Roty family’s unrelenting dedication to quality is in fact due to the tight-knitness of the family’s winemaking style. This 2007 is sure to be found in every collector’s cellar, as it is the last vintage Joseph made before passing away. Today, his son Philippe runs the estate. The longstanding history and generational secrets have assuredly been passed down to Philippe and I, for one, am very excited to see how his wines age and develop, just as I have done with his father’s wines.

The phenomenal 2007 Gevrey-Chambertin has a saturated, dark garnet center that quickly moves to light ruby and light garnet with slight orange reflections on the rim—showing the typical signs of ageing. Classic aromas of maturing Red Burgundy overtake your senses with dried strawberry, black cherry, raspberry, dried rose petals, mushroom, forest floor, dried clay and a touch of baking spices. The near, full-bodied palate possesses a beautifully rich texture that is layered with a lot of fruit, quickly moving to layers of savory flavors and soft tannins. This wine is reaching a captivating point in its life and is an absolute pleasure to enjoy right now; when drinking now, pull the cork one hour before serving in large Burgundy stems at just above cellar temperature. This wine evolves marvelously, so don’t be afraid to sip it slowly and enjoy it while it opens in the glass. Although this wine is ideal to drink now, this wine can easily be cellared for another decade or more if kept cold and dark. If you’ve never tried Red Burgundy with duck and rhubarb, this is the perfect opportunity.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
