I Favati, Fiano di Avellino, Pietramara

Most italian white wine can be quite neutral in flavor. There are incredible wines to be found, but it takes some searching to find wines of inspiration. Amongst all the white wines from Italy, Fiano di Avellino is considered to be one of the major stars. Over the last few years of tasting, the wines of I Favati have continually impressed me. Their whites are rich and full bodied, perfectly balanced, with texture, spice and mouth watering acidity coming together in the most appealing way possible. Part of the reason these wines shine so brightly, is their careful attention to the vineyards. The Pietramara Vineyard is planted at nearly 1500 feet of elevation, 30 miles from the ocean and just north of the crater which was Mount Vesuvius. This volcano had a fierce explosion more than 2000 years ago, spreading volcanic ash throughout the region that truly gives these wines a character reminding us of its place.

The I Favati Fiano is fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks, retaining the purity of the grape. The wine is a medium straw yellow to a light green reflection on the rim. Green tropical fruit, yellow apple, cantaloupe, white pepper and crushed earth dominate the aromatic profile. The palate is creamy, salty and concentrated, with green tropical fruits, while left with a spice and bright acidity on the finish. This is a remarkable Italian white fit for a variety of foods from grilled fish to roast chicken. This wine benefits from air, so a brief decant is a good idea. Drink between 50-60 degrees for best results. This is a wine to enjoy with food or by itself as an afternoon sipper.

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
