Pierre Guillemot Les Serpentieres 1er Cru, Savigny-les-Beaune

Domaine Pierre Guillemot is located in Savigny-lès-Beaune, a small wine making village located in the Côte de Beaune, very close to the base of the famous hill of Corton. The wines from this appellation can vary in styles from rustic, farm like smells reminiscent of a funky smelling cellar, or, like in this case, wines showing a purity of fruit while still expressing the slightly rustic terroir of the appellation. This Domaine farms in a method coined Lutte Raisonnée (reasonable farming), basically meaning they farm completely naturally unless the crop is at risk. The Les Serpentières 1er Cru is the considered to be one of the best, if not the very best of the appellation.  His expression of this particular site has an incredible elegance on the palate creating a perfect glass of Burgundy while young, but I have been told these wines can age up to 30-40 years if kept properly.

The 2012 Serpentieres has a dark ruby core consistent to the rim showing lots of vibrant color. The aromatics display an intense aromatic display of freshly picked strawberry, bing cherry, black raspberry, wet forest floor, dried clay and wild herbs. The palate is medium body and concentrated with wild berry fruit and wild herbs with an angular minerality typical of Savigny. When I tasted this wine and looked at the price I smiled pretty big. It is rare to find a wine which delivers so much pleasure at this price. There is no need to decant this wine, but ideally serve this at about 60-65 degrees out of a Burgundy stem for best results.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
