Maison Leroy, Saint Aubin, Le Charmois, Premier Cru

Wines that bear the Leroy name are either are domaine or maison. You can identify the difference by the wax capsule -- typically if the wine has a wax capsule, it is from her own estates and if it has a foil, she carefully purchases great fruit.  The wine we are offering today is Maison Leroy, St. Aubin Le Charmois. The village of St. Aubin borders the famous villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.  Although it does not receive the same acclaim as these storied villages, St. Aubin deserves more recognition for some of its great wines.

Madame Bize Leroy has been making wine for over 50 years and her relationships give her access to some of the very best fruit in Burgundy. Today we are privileged to offer her 2002 Le Charmois. Not only is this wine from the great vintage of 2002, it is from a producer whose meticulous winemaking techniques set her apart from anyone else in the world. This wine was beautifully cellared at the estate and we were able to purchase only a small amount to offer you today.

Even though this wine is 12 years old, it will probably peak in the next 10-15 years.  I had an open bottle at my house and after 2 days being open, it finally started to reach its peak. This is very rare for a white burgundy and it speaks of the wines ability to age.  The color of the wine is vibrant yellow, which is indicative of a younger wine.  The aromatics are mineral driven and concentrated.  Aromas of white peach, bosc pear, yellow apple, fresh acacia flowers, honey, and oyster shells emanate from the glass.  The tense mineral driven palate has high acidity and freshness. This amazingly textured wine has flavors of lemon zest, tart yellow apple, crushed seashell and hazelnut. I can't tell you how much I love this wine.  It is truly hard to express in words.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
