Cascina Longoria, Fratelli Toso, Langhe Nebbiolo

The fruit for this bottling originates from one of the two most important Nebbiolo growing appellations in the world: Barbaresco. However, since this specific vineyard is not purely south facing, which is necessary to bear the name Barbaresco DOCG, the wine has been declassified to Langhe Nebbiolo.  This simple change in the label's nomenclature offers a great opportunity to enjoy a near perfect expression of this noble grape variety for a fraction of its normal cost. Cascina Longoria is a small bed & breakfast and wine farm, owned and operated by two brothers. The entire property is dedicated to farming organically, and without any heavy handed technology in the vineyard or cellar. This approach extends to the wines—which are pure, unpretentious and reliably delicious. Fruit is harvested by hand, destemmed and fermented in large ceramic tanks. Skin contact is limited to avoid over-extraction of tannin and the juice is gently pressed into large, used oak barrels where it rests for a year. Finally, the wine is bottled and then aged an additional six months before release.

The color of the wine is a concentrated dark ruby color with a slight garnet rim. The nose displays ripe yet earthy notes of black cherry, red currants, fresh roses, dried leaves and crushed rocks. The palate has a richness, texture, and fruit forward character imparted by the addition of 5% Barbera. This finished product is juicy and drinkable in style with lighter tannin than most expressions of Nebbiolo in the region. Although this wine will age well, it should ideally be consumed in its youth over the next few years. Decanting is recommended—thirty minutes at least—before serving just above cellar temp in large Burgundy stems.

Italy

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
