The Lineup: A Tour Of California Icons

The Whites

1. 2023 Crocker & Starr, AVA Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

"Napa’s Sauvignon Blanc Pioneer"

For decades, Pam Starr has cleaved her own path through the Napa wine scene, championing Sauvignon Blanc when others focused solely on Chardonnay. Her collaboration with the historic Crocker estate has produced a Sauvignon Blanc of uncommon depth and structure. The cool 2023 vintage allowed for extended hang time, resulting in a wine fermented in a mix of stainless steel, concrete eggs, and older French oak. The result is a mouthwatering expression with profound minerality and stone fruit character, offering both power and refreshment.

  • Region: Napa Valley, California
  • Tasting Notes: White peach, apricot pit, lime zest, jasmine, oyster shell, seaspray
  • Pairing: Grilled shellfish, oysters, light summer fare

2. 2022 Red Car, Chardonnay, "Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard", Fort Ross-Seaview

"Coastal California Chardonnay"

From the rugged, high-altitude vineyards of the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, this Chardonnay from Red Car is a stunning example of coastal winemaking. The Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard produces a wine with incredible tension, bright acidity, and a complex aromatic profile of citrus, green apple, and a distinctive saline minerality. It’s a vibrant and compelling expression of the extreme Sonoma Coast.

  • Region: Fort Ross-Seaview, Sonoma Coast, California
  • Tasting Notes: Lemon peel, green apple, sea spray, crushed oyster shell
  • Pairing: Raw oysters, grilled halibut, fresh crab

The Reds

3. 2023 Lioco, "Indica" Mendocino Red Table Wine, Mendocino

"The Quintessential California Field Blend"

A true “field blend,” this wine is a co-fermentation of Carignan, Valdiguié, and other varietals from old vines in Mendocino County. It’s a unique and delicious red that is both complex and easy-drinking, with notes of red cherry, raspberry, and a hint of spice, with a fresh, juicy finish.

  • Region: Mendocino County, California
  • Tasting Notes: Red cherry, raspberry, spice, fresh herbs
