La Spinetta, Barbaresco “Valeirano”

La Spinetta’s Giorgio Rivetti was the breakout star of the 1990s in Barbaresco, crafting resolutely “modern” wines that show a more luscious, layered side of the Nebbiolo grape. “Valeirano” is one of La Spinetta’s prized cru vineyards, facing southwest and producing perhaps the most profound of the estate’s single-vineyard Barbarescos. It is powerfully structured, aging for 20-22 months in French oak barriques and about six months in bottle before release. The concentration of fruit and earth is always Barolo-esque in its intensity, with lots of sappy dark cherry fruit balanced by notes of balsamic, black tea, turned earth, tobacco, and leather. Always a critical darling, this ’16 is poised to age 20+ years with ease!

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
