2025 Comando G, "Navatalgordo", Sierra de Gredos

Comando G was founded in 2008 by Fernando García and Daniel Landi, two friends who set out to rescue the forgotten old-vine Garnacha of the Sierra de Gredos, the granite mountain range that rises west of Madrid. Working abandoned bush-vine parcels at high elevation by hand, with organic and biodynamic farming, they helped spark a revolution in how the world sees Spanish Garnacha. Their wines are pale, perfumed, and transparent, more often compared to red Burgundy than to the ripe, heady Grenache of the Mediterranean. Like Burgundy, they organize their range by place, from regional wine to village bottlings to single-vineyard crus.

“Navatalgordo” comes from one of the highest and coolest corners of their territory, old bush vines around the village of Navatalgordo in the upper Alberche Valley, in the province of Ávila. Here the vines sit above 1,000 meters in decomposed granite and sand, and the sharp swing between warm days and cold nights produces Garnacha of striking freshness and clarity. The fruit is fermented with native yeasts and a high share of whole clusters, then raised in neutral oak vats and concrete.

Why You'll Love It

  • Extreme-altitude Garnacha that shows how cool and elegant this grape can be in the right hands.
  • Aromas of tart wild raspberry, cranberry, blood orange, lavender, and pine needle.
  • Pale and energetic on the palate, driven by mouthwatering acidity rather than weight.
  • A long, stony finish with fine, chalky tannins and a lingering note of alpine herbs.
  • A thrilling red for anyone who loves cool-climate Pinot Noir or cru Beaujolais.

How To Serve It

  • Serve with a slight chill, between 56°F and 60°F.
  • Decant for about 30 minutes to let its high-altitude aromatics unwind.
  • Pour into Burgundy stems to maximize its ethereal bouquet.
  • Pair with roast quail with juniper and bay, duck breast with blood orange, or jamón ibérico and grilled bread.
