2023 Domaine Albert Joly, Puligny-Montrachet "Les Reuchaux"
Domaine Albert Joly is a small, family-run grower estate based in the village of Puligny-Montrachet, home to some of the most celebrated Chardonnay vineyards in the world. The family farms its old-vine village parcels with traditional, sustainable Burgundian methods (lutte raisonnée), keeping yields low and letting each site speak. Les Reuchaux is a well-regarded lieu-dit (named single vineyard) on the gentle lower slopes of the village, where the vines root into clay-limestone soils scattered with small stones and pebbles.
The 2023 was harvested by hand, pressed as whole clusters, and fermented with native yeasts before aging about a year in French oak barrels on its fine lees, with only a modest share of new oak. That restrained approach keeps the focus on Puligny's hallmark tension and minerality, while the lees aging adds texture and depth to the mid-palate.
Why You'll Love It
A single-lieu-dit Puligny-Montrachet from a small family grower, at a fair price for the village.
Meyer lemon, white peach, and green apple on the nose, with delicate white blossoms.
Toasted hazelnut and lees richness fill out a satisfying, textured palate.
A chalky, saline mineral spine keeps it focused and fresh through a long finish.
Lovely now with a short decant, and capable of rewarding cellaring into the 2030s.
How To Serve It
Serve chilled, between 50°F and 54°F. Avoid over-chilling so its aromas can show.
Decant for 15 to 20 minutes to let the subtle reduction and toasty notes open up.
Pour into Burgundy stems to capture its floral bouquet.
Pair with seared scallops in beurre blanc, Dover sole meunière, butter-poached lobster, or roast chicken with morels.
