2022 Passagem by Quinta de la Rosa, Reserva White, Douro Superior
The Douro is not all about fortified wines and hearty tintos. Crafted in joint partnership by Jorge Moreira and Quinta de la Rosa’s Bergqvist family, Passagem is sourced from Quinta das Bandeiras—a high-altitude, slate-strewn single estate in the rugged Douro Superior. Think of this as the Douro’s answer to Meursault: a blend of old-vine Rabigato, Viosinho, and Gouveio that balances rich, oak-kissed Burgundian weight with laser-cut mineral precision. Partial barrel fermentation in French oak layers supple white peach, lemon curd, and toasted brioche over a core of crushed slate and electric natural acidity, culminating in a long, mouthwatering finish. It delivers the structural complexity and broad, textural power of a $75+ Premier Cru white Burgundy at a fraction of the price tag.
Why You'll Love It
A sophisticated Portuguese white showing the real potential of Douro dry whites.
Blends rich texture from French oak maturation with piercing, stony acidity.
Layers of white peach, citrus peel, toasted almonds, and wet schist minerality.
Grown on steep schist terraces that push these indigenous grapes to their fullest expression.
How To Serve It
Serve slightly chilled, between 50°F and 54°F, avoiding too cold a pour so the texture can show.
Decant for 15 to 20 minutes to let the oak spice and orchard fruit uncoil.
All-purpose stems let you appreciate its complex aromatics and body.
A fantastic partner for pan-seared halibut, salt cod, or pork cooked with clams.
