Founded in 1849, Reichsrat von Buhl has spent nearly two centuries defining what aristocratic, age-worthy Pfalz Riesling can be. Its holdings encompass the blue-chip slopes of Deidesheim and Forst, and their greatest wines remain exercises in precision rather than pomp—bottles that make a compelling case for Riesling as one of the world’s most stunning and transparent vehicles for place.
Few places speak more forcefully than Forster Pechstein, a 17.1-hectare Grosse Lage whose dark basalt and ancient volcanic soils provide Riesling its unmistakable smoke, crushed-stone savor, and mineral authority. In the brisk, classically proportioned 2021 vintage, von Buhl’s Pechstein is all tensile energy: iodine, citrus pith, herbs, flint, and a palate that hums with subterranean electricity. Powerful but unforced, this wine is built for the table now and can rest easily in your cellar for decades. Critical Acclaim:
96 Points, Wine Advocate
"The intensely yellow-colored 2021 Forster Pechstein Riesling GG is pure and dusty on the deep and intense, iodine and flinty nose that is reminiscent of crushed stones, lemon rind and ripe lemon fruit. Full-bodied, rich and savory on the palate, with dense and textural fruit and a stimulating salinity and firm tannin structure, this is a very intense and complex, still youthful Pechstein with a long, tight and still slightly astringent but very promising finish with lemon bitters. There is lots of energy here and the need to wait another four or more years. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2024"
96 Points, Vinous Media
"The 2021 Riesling Forster Pechstein Grosses Gewächs has only a slight ring of Mirabelle on its shy nose. The palate is uncompromisingly bright, with a stony backdrop and an intensely vivid acidity, buffered but certainly not for beginners. This is countered by much stony solidity and substance. A zesty body shows immense depth. This is a monumental and exquisite wine without a single ounce of fat that will take time to blossom. The length is immense. Analytical values of 9g/L of acidity and 1.8g/L of residual sweetness give you an idea of what I mean by monumental."
Why You'll Love It
-
Grosses Gewächs, Grand Cru gravitas and a true volcanic Riesling: smoky basalt, citrus oil, savory herb, salt, and stony intensity rather than simple fruit.

It combines 2021’s brilliant acidity with the breadth and concentration for which the famed Pechstein GG is prized for.
-
A 96-point Wine Advocate benchmark from one of the Pfalz’s historic great estates—at the nation’s best price on multiple bottles.
How To Serve It
-
Serve at 50–55°F in a generous white-wine or Burgundy stem; too cold and its mineral depth will stay hidden.
-
Open 30 minutes ahead, especially if drinking now—the wine will gain aromatic amplitude and textural polish with air.
-
Match it with rich seafood, roast pork, smoked fish, schnitzel, or alpine cheeses; it has the structure to handle butter, salt, smoke, and spice.
