2020 Quercecchio di Maria Grazia Salvoni, Brunello di Montalcino

The Salvioni family has worked this ex-Olivetan monastery land for five generations. The monks' ideographs still mark the old buildings, their 14th-century Chronicon Cancellariae documenting centuries of vines on these slopes.

The estate sprawls across 150 hectares, with far less planted, in southern Montalcino’s Tavernelle township. Woods, pastures, olive groves, and those precious vineyards where Maria-Grazia personally oversees every decision. She doesn't just make wine here. She honors her ancestors with her work. At 85 years young, Maria is the fifth generation of the Salvioni family to make wine at the Quercecchio estate, in their tiny, cramped, stone cellar with zero modern technology.

Sipping this Brunello is like entering a time portal into a magical bygone era when Brunello di Montalcino was a more honest, super elegant, "pure terroir" wine, crafted to reflect the idiosyncrasies of vintage, a micro-specific vineyard, and ancient family tradition.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Rarity Factor: 69 cases nationwide. The only other place you might find this wine is is in top restaurants. There’s just not enough.

  • The Tavernelle Signature: That unmistakable lift: lilting red fruit and chalky soil tones are a dead giveaway that you’re in the late, legendary Gianfranco Soldera’s neighborhood.

  • A Labor of Love: An 85-year-old grower puts her name on this bottle. She’s surrounded by well-heeled neighbors who charge multiples more. This is a rare little jewel-box to savor, knowing that not everyone can get it.

How to Drink It

  • Serve at 60°-64°F. Decant for 1-2 hours to unfurl and transform. Drink in Bordeaux stems.

  • Drink now through 2035. Pair with Pappardelle al Cinghiale (Wild Boar Ragu) or or bistecca alla fiorentina with fresh truffles
