Master Somm Selection: 6 Wines Way Off The Beaten Path

This curated six-pack is a journey to the edges of the wine world — a collection of bottles from visionary producers who are championing forgotten grapes, farming impossible terroirs, and rewriting the map of fine wine. The journey begins with two thrilling Greek discoveries: a vibrant rosé made from the nearly lost Limniona grape, and a high-altitude, alpine expression of Assyrtiko from the mainland. It moves to the Loire Valley for a bone-dry, mineral-driven Chenin Blanc from the tiny Jasnières appellation, followed by a crisp, Chablis-like Erbaluce from Northern Piedmont. The collection culminates with two serious, structured reds: a powerful, age-worthy Timorasso from Colli Tortonesi, and a perfumed, earthy Trousseau from the Jura.

2025 Domaine Zafeirakis "Limniona" Rosé, PGI Tyrnavos

"The Greek Revival"

Christos Zafeirakis has single-handedly revived the ancient, indigenous Limniona grape from near-extinction in the foothills of Mount Olympus, transforming it into one of Greece's most exciting viticultural success stories. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the Tyrnavos region, this exceptional rosé showcases the grape's natural affinity for producing vibrant, terroir-expressive wines. Fermented using native yeasts and aged briefly in stainless steel to preserve its pristine energy, this bottling highlights a masterfully balanced expression of alpine freshness and Mediterranean soul. In the glass, the two thousand twenty-five vintage displays a beautiful, pale translucent pink hue and opens with a delicate, expressive bouquet of wild strawberries, pomegranate, and white flower petals, underpinned by a distinct mineral edge. The palate is crisp, bone-dry, and remarkably refreshing, offering a burst of crunchy red fruit flavors that seamlessly transition into a savory, mouthwatering finish marked by a hint of flinty stone.

Pair with: Grilled octopus, fresh summer salads, or traditional meze platters.

2025 Kir-Yianni Assyrtiko "The North", PGI Florina

"The Alpine Assyrtiko"

Kir-Yianni is one of those rare estates that manages to feel both historic and forward-thinking at the same time. Founded in nineteen ninety-seven by the legendary Yiannis Boutaris, the estate was conceived from day one as a quality-first, terroir-driven project in northern Greece. In Amyndeon, where "The North" is born, the combination of sandy, poor soils and cool nights gives naturally small berries, intense aromatics, and a tension that feels much more mountain Mediterranean than sun-drenched Aegean. "The North" is Kir-Yianni's love letter to Assyrtiko in this cooler, continental corner of Macedonia, far from its famous volcanic home on Santorini. Here, Assyrtiko trades ocean spray and lava rock for altitude, sand, and a more linear, alpine expression: think citrus and stone fruit framed by cut-glass acidity and a fine, stony edge. Fermented in stainless steel and fleshed out on its lees, the wine is crafted to showcase precision over power, freshness over heft.

Pair with: Fried calamari, feta-stuffed zucchini, or lemon-herb roasted chicken.

2002 Paul Anheuser, Riesling Spätlese "Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl" Halbtrocken

"The Library Release"

The Anheuser family has been farming the Nahe since sixteen twenty-seven — long before their distant cousins headed to St. Louis to found the Budweiser empire — and that fourteen-generation expertise is evident in every drop of this rare library release. Hidden away in the estate's underground cellars since bottling in two thousand three, this specific cask was meticulously selected and re-corked in twenty twenty-five before making its first-ever trip stateside. The "Halbtrocken" (off-dry) Spätlese comes from the Krötenpfuhl — or "Toad's Pond" — vineyard in Bad Kreuznach, where tertiary gravel and loess soils produce a broader, more fruit-forward style of Riesling. In the glass, the two thousand two is a light golden treasure, exploding with evolved notes of wildflower honey, beeswax, and dried apricots, all balanced by a smoky, flinty minerality that defines the Lower Nahe. Despite its residual sugar, the eleven percent alcohol and firm acidity provide a chiseled, dry-tasting finish. This is what properly aged Riesling looks like: a wine transformed by two decades of patience into something genuinely extraordinary.

Pair with: Smoked trout, salmon with dill cream, or a rich pâté.

2024 Luigi Ferrando, Erbaluce di Caluso "La Torrazza"

"The Piedmontese Secret"

Italian white wines are finally earning the recognition they deserve, standing shoulder to shoulder with Europe's most celebrated classics. Among Italy's countless local varieties, few shine brighter than Erbaluce, and no name is more synonymous with this grape than Ferrando. Founded in eighteen ninety in Ivrea, north of Turin, the Luigi Ferrando estate is a true Piedmontese benchmark and an icon of Italian winemaking. Their wines capture the character of the region's mineral-rich glacial soils while showcasing the remarkable versatility of Erbaluce. "La Torrazza" exemplifies why: a wine of impeccable balance, striking minerality, taut structure, and sheer pleasure. It delivers a crisp, Chablis-like dry profile, making it an essential addition to any serious list and a brilliant introduction to Northern Piedmont's white wine potential.

Pair with: Bagna cauda, vitello tonnato, or delicate white fish.

2023 Ricci Timorasso Derthona, Colli Tortonesi

"The White Barolo"

Cascina San Leto sits at the heart of Colli Tortonesi in southeast Piemonte, where Daniele Ricci works eight hectares of certified-organic vines planted by his grandparents in nineteen twenty-nine. Daniele joined pioneers like Walter Massa to resurrect the ancient Timorasso variety when plantings had dwindled to just a few hectares. Timorasso defies Italian white wine norms: no light, neutral quaffer here, but a full-bodied beast with high extract, firm acidity, and serious aging potential—often called Italy's "White Barolo" for its brooding structure and minerality. The two thousand twenty-three Ricci "Derthona" sees three days of skin contact for phenolic grip, followed by native fermentation and lees aging in steel and acacia. From sun-drenched southwest-facing slopes of calcareous clay, it pours light gold with ripe apricot, honeyed stone fruit, flint, and spice. The powerful yet precise palate of citrus peel, saline herbs, and chalky drive builds to a long, structured finish.

Pair with: Truffle risotto, aged pecorino, or roasted pork loin.

2023 Benedicte & Stephane Tissot, Trousseau "Singulier"

"The Jura Jewel"

Stéphane Tissot is widely considered the benchmark producer of the Jura, crafting wines of profound purity and terroir transparency through rigorous biodynamic farming. "Singulier" is his monovarietal expression of Trousseau, a rare, thin-skinned red grape native to the region that produces light-colored but intensely aromatic wines. Grown on limestone soils and fermented with native yeasts, the two thousand twenty-three vintage is a delicate balancing act. The nose is gorgeous and pungent, offering bright aromas of dried rose petals, red currant, wild raspberry, and leafy earth. On the palate, it is light-bodied but deeply flavorful, with notes of ripe strawberry, wet leaves, and warm spices, all framed by vibrant acidity and a long, dry finish. It is a singular, earthy, and highly perfumed red that captures the wild, untamed spirit of the Jura.

Pair with: Duck confit, wild mushroom tart, or an assortment of charcuterie.
