2016 Bordeaux Left Bank 6-Bottle Wine Pack

2016 Bordeaux Left Bank Horizontal

The 2016 Left Bank 6 explores Bordeaux through three of its great Cabernet-driven appellations: Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, and Pessac-Léognan. Léoville Poyferré, Saint-Pierre, Gloria, Meyney, Domaine de Chevalier, and Malartic-Lagravière provide six distinct expressions of the Left Bank, from the polished structure of Saint-Julien to the power of Saint-Estèphe and the smoky, gravel-driven character of Pessac-Léognan.

Few vintages could make the comparison more compelling than 2016. A long, dry summer concentrated the fruit, while September rain and an extended harvest preserved freshness and allowed Cabernet Sauvignon to reach exceptional maturity. Across the Left Bank, the resulting wines combine deep fruit and firm structure with the balance, acidity, and precision needed for decades of evolution.

Nearly ten years after harvest, these wines are beginning to move into an exciting stage. The tannins are relaxing, secondary notes are starting to emerge, and the underlying differences between appellations are becoming increasingly clear. Together, these six bottles offer a rare horizontal look at the terroirs that define the Left Bank through one of Bordeaux's great modern vintages.

2016 Bordeaux: A Vintage for the Ages

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest in recent history, surpassing even the legendary 1982 and 1990 vintage. Critics agree that the 2016 Bordeaux vintage strikes an exceptional balance between power and elegance: abundant spring moisture followed by a hot, dry summer concentrated the fruit and built firm, structured tannins. These wines are made to age gracefully for decades, yet many are surprisingly approachable in their youth with proper decanting, offering both immediate pleasure and long-term cellar potential.

  • Characterized by elegant, ripe red fruit, silky tannins, and lower alcohol levels, these wines possess a remarkable freshness and vitality
  • The vintage's unique climate conditions resulted in wines with exceptional balance, purity, and aging potential

The Collection: 6 Iconic Left-Bank Wines

This carefully curated case features 6 outstanding wines from across Bordeaux's prestigious appellations:

The Wines

Château Léoville Poyferré, Saint-Julien (98 pts)

A classic St-Julien with Cabernet backbone and an extra layer of density in 2016. Notes: concentrated black fruits, graphite/cedar, firm ripe tannins and good acidity — shows both power and classic structure. Expect long cellaring.

Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Léognan (97 pts)

A benchmark Graves estate. The 2016 red is dense and refined: blackberries, cedar, tobacco and mineral/rocky notes with tight, fine tannins — a classic cellar candidate with significant structure. Many critics give it very high marks and suggest mid-2020s onward drinking and long-term cellaring. Pairs with roast lamb, beef and grilled aubergine.

Château Saint-Pierre, Saint-Julien, Quatrième Cru Classé (97 pts)

Bordeaux’s 1855 Classification is filled with famous names, but Château Saint-Pierre has somehow remained one of its best-kept secrets. At just 17 hectares, it is the smallest Classified Growth in Saint-Julien, a tiny Quatrième Cru Classé surrounded by some of the most coveted Cabernet terroir on the Left Bank. Its obscurity is largely an accident of history.

Château Malartic-Lagravière Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (96 pts)

Pessac-Léognan grand vin: 2016 red is composed and pure with cassis, tobacco, crushed stones and a menthol/peppery lift. Medium-full body, well integrated oak and saline/mineral thread keep the palate lively — will cellar well (many suggest drinking 2025–2040). Versatile with lamb, roast pork or mature cheeses.

Château Meyney, Saint-Estèphe (96 pts)

Saint-Estèphe’s sturdier profile—2016 gives dense black fruit, graphite, violet florals and firm, supportive tannins. The vintage made Meyney more focused and energetic than some prior years; cellaring will reward you (peaks often cited from mid-2020s to 2035+). Pairs well with roasted beef, lamb and game.

Château Gloria, Saint-Julien (96 pts)

A standout Saint-Julien in 2016: rich, concentrated and surprisingly compelling for its price tier. Expect cassis and black cherry, pencil-shavings/graphite, mocha hints and fine tannins — reviewers flagged it as a star of St-Julien 2016.

Chevalier Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier is one of the historic reference-point estates of Pessac-Léognan, with a reputation built on both its red and white wines. Unlike many of Bordeaux’s great properties, it retains the traditional title of “Domaine” rather than Château, a reflection of its long history and distinctive identity. Its vineyards sit within a secluded clearing surrounded by forest, rooted in the deep gravel soils that define the finest terroirs of the Graves. Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, Domaine de Chevalier remains one of the region’s most respected estates, combining generations of Bordeaux tradition with meticulous vineyard work and remarkable consistency.

Château Malartic-Lagravière

Château Malartic-Lagravière is one of the historic names of Pessac-Léognan and one of only six Graves estates classified for both its red and white wines. Its vineyards occupy one of Léognan’s prized gravel rises, with deep, free-draining soils layered over clay and limestone. The estate takes its name from the Comte de Malartic, whose family acquired the property in the 18th century, but its modern renaissance began with the arrival of the Bonnie family in 1997. Extensive investment in the vineyards and cellar has since restored Malartic-Lagravière to its place among the leading estates of Pessac-Léognan.

Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré traces its roots to the historic Léoville estate, once one of the largest and most important properties in Saint-Julien. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it shares its remarkable lineage with Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton, with vineyards rooted in the deep gravel soils overlooking the Gironde estuary. Under the Cuvelier family, the château has evolved into one of Saint-Julien’s most accomplished estates, combining modern precision with the structure, elegance, and unmistakable character of the Left Bank.

Saint-Julien

Chateau Meyney Chateau Meyney
2016 Vintage

Château Meyney

Château Meyney is one of the oldest and most distinctive estates in Saint-Estèphe, with viticultural roots stretching back to the 13th century and an official history dating to 1625, when the property came into the hands of the Feuillants monks. Today, its remarkable 51-hectare vineyard remains in a single contiguous block, occupying gravelly slopes overlooking the Gironde estuary. Beneath those classic Médoc gravels lies an unusual vein of blue clay, adding another dimension to one of Saint-Estèphe’s most distinctive terroirs. After generations under the influential Cordier family, Meyney entered a new era in 2004 and has reestablished itself as one of the appellation’s most compelling historic estates.

Saint-Estèphe

Chateau Gloria Chateau Gloria
2016 Vintage

Château Gloria

Château Gloria is one of Bordeaux’s great exceptions. Beginning with just one hectare in the late 1930s, Saint-Julien native Henri Martin spent decades assembling the estate parcel by parcel, acquiring prized vineyards largely from the appellation’s 1855 Classified Growths. Because Gloria did not exist when the classification was created, it remains unclassified, despite being built on some of Saint-Julien’s most distinguished terroir. Today, its roughly 50 hectares make it the largest unclassified estate in the appellation and stand as the remarkable legacy of one of the Médoc’s great modern visionaries.
