Master Somm Selection: Sta. Rita Hills Experience

The Sta. Rita Hills AVA is one of California's most thrilling cool-climate regions, defined by its unique east-west transverse valleys that funnel cold Pacific fog and wind directly into the vineyards. This four-bottle Master Selection explores the appellation's signature varieties—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah—through the lens of two of its most respected producers: Deovlet and Alma Rosa. From bright, mineral-driven whites to brooding, structured reds, this pack captures the elegance, energy, and unmistakable coastal influence of the Sta. Rita Hills.

Deovlet, Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County

"The Coastal Opener"

A bright, mineral-driven wine that captures the elegance and energy of California's coolest coastal vineyards. Crafted from carefully selected fruit from top blocks in the appellation, it reflects the region's sandy, well-drained soils and persistent maritime influence, producing Chardonnay with crisp acidity, layered texture, and clear sense of place. Built around elite vineyards of Santa Barbara county, the wine showcases lots of Zotovich and Sanford & Benedict vineyard as well as La Encantada. Winemaker Ryan Deovlet focuses on letting the vineyard speak, using gentle fermentation and judicious oak aging to highlight freshness, aromatic complexity, and natural vibrancy. On the nose, expect aromas of white peach, citrus, and floral notes, lifted by subtle hints of mineral and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied, structured yet silky, with bright acidity carrying flavors of lemon, green apple, and stone fruit into a long, precise finish.

Pair with: Pan-seared scallops, roast chicken, or a classic Caesar salad.

Deovlet, Pinot Noir "Zotovich Family Vineyard", Sta. Rita Hills

"The Elegant Expression"

The Deovlet Pinot Noir from Zotovich Family Vineyard is a pure expression of Sta. Rita Hills, showcasing the precision and elegance that have made Ryan Deovlet one of California's most celebrated winemakers. This single-vineyard bottling comes from a site known for its sandy, mineral-rich soils and cool maritime climate, producing Pinot Noir of brightness, clarity, and layered complexity. Zotovich Family Vineyard sits at a gentle elevation in the heart of Sta. Rita Hills and is planted to top Pinot Noir clones. Careful vineyard management and hand-harvested fruit yield small berries with concentrated flavor and structural finesse. In the glass, the wine offers vivid red fruit notes of raspberry and cranberry, floral hints, and subtle spice. Savory undertones and gentle earthiness add depth while fine tannins and bright acidity provide structure and balance.

Pair with: Grilled salmon, duck breast, or mushroom risotto.

Alma Rosa, Pinot Noir "Rancho La Viña Vineyard", Sta. Rita Hills

"The Grand Cru Neighborhood"

Seeking a cool-climate California Pinot Noir with balance, plush textures, and gorgeous red fruit purity? The Alma Rosa "Rancho La Viña Vineyard" Pinot Noir is hitting its absolute stride with perfect bottle age. Rancho La Viña commands a true "Grand Cru" neighborhood on the cooler western corridor of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. It is directly sandwiched between the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard and the iconic La Encantada site, harvested from vines transitioning into organic farming. These small, concentrated berries yield a deeper, more brooding expression of Pinot Noir that coats the palate with luxurious layers of black plum and dark, brambly fruit. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after aging in fifty percent new French oak, it delivers a striking combination of velvety muscle and bright coastal energy.

Pair with: Roast pork loin, lamb chops, or aged Gruyère.

Alma Rosa, Syrah "El Jabali", Sta. Rita Hills

"The High-Elevation Powerhouse"

Grown seven hundred and fifty feet high in the hills, this bottling reveals the potential power of cooler climate Syrah. The El Jabali estate sits on the north-facing slopes of the Sta. Rita Hills, where sandy soils and strong coastal winds shape Rhône-style wines of distinctive character. Deep and brooding, the Syrah offers aromas of dark chocolate, nutmeg, charred wood and peppercorn, layered over notes of black fruit, blackberry, and coffee cream. The palate is bold yet balanced, with chicory, black licorice, cooked berries and figs supported by grippy, elongated tannins. A touch of black tea and violets add lift and complexity, leading to a savory finish. Winemaker Samra Morris utilizes thirty percent whole cluster fermentation and ages the wine for fourteen months in seventy percent new French oak, bottling it unfined and unfiltered to preserve its raw, coastal intensity.

Pair with: Braised short ribs, smoked brisket, or grilled lamb skewers.
