2021 Dr. Hermann, Ürziger Würzgarten in der Kranklei, Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben Goldkapsel

This is the ultimate textbook Mosel Riesling that checks every single box for collectors, yet arrives at an insanely affordable price for a “Goldkapsel” bottling. The magic lies in the Ürziger Würzgarten—a legendary vineyard famed for its iron-rich red volcanic sandstone and slate soils that impart a signature exotic, tropical spice found nowhere else on earth. Tucked inside is In der Kranklei, an ultra-historic sub-parcel where ancient, ungrafted vines aged 80 to over 100 years old yield a minuscule amount of deeply concentrated fruit. Crowned with a coveted "Goldkapsel" to denote extraordinary richness and backed by a massive 96-point review from the Wine Advocate, this spectacular 2021 release is built for a profoundly long life in the cellar.

While the Dr. Hermann estate was officially founded in 1967 following the division of the historic Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben property, the family’s winemaking roots span several centuries. Today, Christian Hermann meticulously manages just over nine hectares of prime, steep estate slopes. He adheres to a rigorous philosophy of hand-harvesting and natural soil cultivation to coax absolute regional perfection out of his ancient vines, a dedication that recently earned the estate a well-deserved induction into the prestigious VDP (elite German winery association).

In the glass, the 2021 In der Kranklei Spätlese delivers pure, high-toned energy. It opens with an explosive bouquet of crunchy mineral undertones,  yellow peach, and wild herbs, balanced by a mouthwatering salinity. At a light-footed 7.5% ABV, the wine dances across the palate with a brilliant tension, balancing its moderate residual sugar with a precise, laser-focused acidity. Rich yet weightless, sweet yet fiercely crisp, this is a rare chance to secure a century-old, 96-point liquid monument from one of Germany's greatest white wine terroirs without breaking the bank.

96 Points, Wine Advocate:

From vines about 100 years old, the 2021 Ürziger Würzgarten In der Kranklei Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben (Gold Capsule) was picked in early November with 89° Oechsle. The wine shows a clear, deep, pure and intense, stony/herbal bouquet that is highly refined and complex but by far not as opulent or fruit intense compared to former vintages. Round and refined on the palate, this is a generous, saline and playful Spätlese of great finesse. The wine is not really rich or generous but a perfect mix of body, salt, grip and ripe, elegant fruit. The acidity is highly refined and leads to a saline, salivating finish with stimulating crunchy slate splinters. Absolutely fabulous! This has 7.5% stated alcohol plus a moderate 72 grams per liter of residual sugar.
