2020 Brezza, Barolo "Sarmassa"

The Brezza family has been rooted in Barolo since 1885, long before “single‑cru” and “icons” became part of the everyday wine vocabulary. Over four generations they’ve quietly done the same thing in the same place: tend Nebbiolo in and around the village of Barolo, live above the cellar, and welcome guests at the adjoining Hotel Barolo—a kind of living museum of traditional Barolo life. Today cousins Enzo and Giacomo Brezza are at the helm, and their philosophy is disarmingly simple: farm organically, pick for balance rather than brute ripeness, ferment long and gently, and age everything in large, neutral botti so that what you taste is vineyard and grape, not winemaking fashion. Their wines fell out of vogue during the “big, oaky, super‑extracted” era, but in the last decade they’ve come roaring back as reference points for purity, lift, and terroir transparency.

Into that context comes 2020 Barolo “Sarmassa,” from a single parcel on the Barolo hillside that faces west and southwest over clay‑rich, fossil‑laden marls. Sarmassa has more clay and less sand than Cannubi, and you feel it immediately: the wine is firmer, darker‑toned, more sinewy, with tannins that grip a bit more yet still carry Brezza’s trademark elegance. Long maceration in steel and aging in big botti don’t make the wine austere; they give it a calm, composed voice—rose petals and red cherry, yes, but also earth, licorice, menthol and a cool mineral backbone that makes you think more of freshness than power. It’s the kind of Barolo that feels like it knows exactly where it’s from, and doesn’t need to shout about it.

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast

"Editor's choice: This Barolo opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe blackberries, juicy red currants, and a subtle smoky note. The palate showcases a well-balanced mix of succulent black cherries, plums, and earthy nuances. With its well-crafted structure and beautifully perfumed character, this wine offers a well of depth and personality that will be the star of the table. Drink Now -2040"

Why You’ll Love It

  • It tastes like old‑school Barolo made by people who never stopped believing in it: floral, savory, and finely etched rather than dense and flashy, with vineyard character front and center.

  • Sarmassa’s extra clay gives you real structure and age‑worthiness, but Brezza’s gentle touch keeps the tannins silky enough that you can enjoy it now with a good decant.

  • 2020 shows that “classic” doesn’t mean boring—there’s energy, perfume, and nuance here, making it as compelling at the dinner table as it is in a serious Nebbiolo lineup.

How To Serve It

  • Pour it at cellar temperature (around 60–64°F) in a large bowl‑shaped glass so the aromatics can stretch out and the tannins don’t feel rigid.

  • Give the bottle 1–2 hours in a decanter if it’s young; Sarmassa will loosen up, the fruit will sweeten on the nose, and the palate will feel more layered and generous.

  • Match it with soulful, savory food—braised beef, game birds, truffle‑laced pastas, or aged cheeses—where its structure, spice and long, earthy finish can really earn their keep.
