We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Dominique Joseph, fourth-generation owner and winemaker of Le Petit St. Vincent in Saumur-Champigny, is crafting some of the most aromatically pure, complex, and transparent Cabernet Francs on the planet.
His "Pélo" and "Clos Lyzières" bottlings have been annual offerings for years, earning enthusiastic praise from clients. Today, we’re incredibly fortunate to secure an allocation of "Les Poyeaux"—the most famous lieu-dit for red wine in the entire Loire Valley. This revered site is behind the triple-digit bottling from Clos Rougeard, a producer widely regarded as the ultimate interpreter of the varietal and a cult collector’s icon.
The 2018 vintage retail price stateside ranges between $250 and $350+, with older vintages commanding even higher premiums. Yet, Le Petit St. Vincent’s version offers exponentially greater value, delivering what we’d argue is the same remarkable quality for a fraction of the price. If you’re lucky enough to own Clos Rougeard or possess older vintages, we recommend keeping them tucked away—while securing 6 to 12 bottles of Dominique’s stunning rendition.
This is one of the most terroir-driven wines we’ve tasted in quite some time, especially at this price point. You’ll be hard-pressed to find it in the retail marketplace. Act fast—this gem will sell out quickly. Santé!
If you haven't yet experienced Saumur-Champigny, you are in for a delectable treat. It combines the nuance of Red Burgundy with the wild (sauvage) notes of a Northern Rhône Syrah, yet make no mistake: Saumur-Champigny is entirely unique. This 2021 vintage is seductively aromatic, bursting with red and purple flowers alongside a savory blend of ripe fruits. Expect notes of black cherry, wild plum, black raspberry, violet, rose petals, huckleberry pie, undergrowth, wild herbs, crushed stone, wet earth, and a subtle hint of baking spice. "Les Poyeaux" is both structured and supple, featuring soft tannins and a building rush of acidity as it progresses across the palate.
