Pinot Noir is one of the world’s most transparent and site-sensitive grape varieties, shaped entirely by soil, climate, and elevation. In Burgundy, its benchmark expressions are defined by a precise hierarchy of appellations—from regional Bourgogne Rouge to village-level wines in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Volnay, and Pommard, where limestone and marl soils produce wines ranging from perfumed and silky to structured and powerful. At the top of the hierarchy, Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards represent the most complete expression of Pinot Noir anywhere in the world.
Outside France, Oregon’s Willamette Valley has emerged as a leading New World reference point for Pinot Noir, with distinct sub-AVAs such as Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Ribbon Ridge, and Yamhill-Carlton each offering a different expression of volcanic and marine sediment soils. These wines typically emphasize purity of fruit, balanced acidity, and a restrained, site-driven structure closer in spirit to Burgundy than to more fruit-forward New World styles.
