Weingut Gassner is a tiny, biodynamic estate in Rust, the only Austrian municipality fully enclosed within the UNESCO‑listed Fertö/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl. Robert and Marianne Gassner revived a dormant family tradition in 2007, farming just a few hectares of old vines by hand, using biodynamic preparations, native‑yeast ferments, and minimal sulfur; the Rusterberg vineyard, where their Blaufränkisch ripens on mineral‑rich “Ruster Schotter” soils of slate and granite, lies at the heart of this low‑lying steppe‑lake ecosystem, whose shallow, saline waters and sweeping reed beds shape a cool‑climate, wind‑rinsed, terroir‑driven style. The 2017 Gassner Blaufränkisch Rusterberg Reserve is a single‑site “Reserve” bottling intended to age, fermented spontaneously and raised in large used Austrian oak and clay amphorae, capturing the quiet intensity of Rust’s heritage vineyards without obvious oak or winemaking makeup.
