Master Somm Selection: 6 Wines Way Off The Beaten Path

This curated six-pack is a journey to the cutting edge of the wine world, a collection of bottles from visionary producers who are championing forgotten grapes and rediscovering overlooked terroirs. From the limestone hills of Croatia to the alpine slopes of Piedmont and the granitic soils of southern Chile, this is a set for the adventurous drinker eager to move beyond the classics. It’s a liquid tour of what’s new and what’s next, featuring three vibrant whites and three electrifying reds that are redefining the boundaries of fine wine.

The Wines

2024 Domaine Nebout "L'Incompris du Tressallier", Val de Loire, France
We begin in the heart of France, but far from the famous appellations. Tressallier is a nearly extinct grape from the Allier department, and this bottling from Domaine Nebout is a testament to what we’ve been missing. With the tension of Chablis and the chalky minerality of Sancerre, it’s a bone-dry, vibrant white with notes of oyster shell, sea salt, and Meyer lemon.
Pair with: Freshly shucked oysters, goat cheese, or a simple plate of charcuterie.

2024 Luigi Ferrando, Erbaluce di Caluso "La Torrazza", Italy
From the alpine foothills of Piedmont, Erbaluce is a grape of soaring acidity and crystalline purity. Luigi Ferrando, the undisputed master of the Canavese region, crafts this benchmark expression. It is a wine of electric energy, with notes of green apple, white flowers, and a crushed-stone minerality that is incredibly refreshing.
Pair with: Trout with almonds, vegetable risotto, or as a perfect aperitivo.

2021 Piquentum Teran, Istria, Croatia
From the Istrian peninsula, a region sharing the limestone-rich soils of neighboring Friuli, comes this vibrant red from the indigenous Teran grape. Dimitri Brečević, a French-born winemaker, crafts this wine with a light touch, resulting in a fragrant, medium-bodied red with notes of sour cherry, iron, and a savory, sanguine quality that is utterly unique.
Pair with: Grilled sausages, prosciutto with figs, or a hearty Istrian bean and pasta soup (Jota).

2023 Diamantakos Preknadi, Naoussa, Greece
Preknadi is perhaps the most obscure grape in this entire collection — a nearly extinct indigenous white variety from the hills of Naoussa in Northern Greece, rescued from the brink of disappearance by a handful of committed growers. This bottling from Diamantakos is a textural, complex white with an aromatic profile of stone fruit, dried herbs, and a distinct earthy, mineral quality that has no real parallel in the wine world. It is a genuine piece of vinous history in a glass.
Pair with: Roasted chicken with herbs, mushroom risotto, or a soft, washed-rind cheese.

2023 Bott Frigyes Kékfrankos, Južnoslovenská, Slovakia
Kékfrankos — the Hungarian name for Blaufränkisch — is one of Central Europe's most underappreciated red grapes, and Slovakia is one of its most compelling homes. Bott Frigyes is a biodynamic producer farming on the southern slopes of the Muzsla Hills, overlooking the Garam River. His Kékfrankos is dense yet energetic, with a beautiful perfume of blue flowers, pretty red fruit, and a long, savory finish.
Pair with: Duck confit, mushroom strudel, or roasted root vegetables.

2022 Pedro Parra, "Miles" Cinsault, Itata Valley, Chile
Our final wine comes from the hands of Pedro Parra, a world-renowned terroir consultant who is now making his own wines in his native Chile. Sourced from old, dry-farmed Cinsault vines planted on iron-rich granite soils, this wine is a revelation. It channels the elegance of Burgundy and the aromatics of Nebbiolo, with a captivating bouquet of wild herbs, red berries, and white pepper.
Pair with: Grilled salmon, pork tenderloin with a cherry sauce, or empanadas.
