2017 Herdade do Mouchão, Mouchão Tinto, Alentejo

If your cellar is already home to the region-defining benchmarks of the Old World—the ethereal longevity of López de Heredia or the wild, structured soul of Chateau Musar—then you are likely already attuned to the magic of tradition. Yet, there remains one "insider’s secret" that stands as the ultimate peer to these icons: Herdade do Mouchão. Located in the heart of Portugal's Alentejo, Mouchão is more than a winery; it is a time capsule. Since the late 1800s, the estate has operated with a steadfast refusal to modernize. Here, electricity didn't even arrive until 1991, and the winemaking remains unchanged: 100% whole-cluster fruit, hand-harvested and crushed by foot in ancient stone lagares, followed by years of slumber in massive, neutral wooden vats (tonels) made of Portuguese oak, macacaúba, and mahogany.

The steward of this uncompromising vision is Iain Richardson, whose family has overseen the estate for generations. Under his guidance, the winemaking team operates with a "less is more" mentality, ensuring that the fruit remains the protagonist. By eschewing modern shortcuts and maintaining a tiny, specialized production, Richardson preserves the rugged, soulful character that has made Mouchão a global benchmark for Alicante Bouschet.

A true monument to Alentejo’s viticultural heritage, the 2017 Mouchão Tinto represents the soul of the Alicante Bouschet grape. Crafted from low-yielding vines in the red-clay soils of Casa Branca, this blend (augmented by 15% Trincadeira) follows a rigorous, old-world protocol: the fruit is foot-trodden in marble lagares and aged for several years in 5,000-liter wooden vats. In the glass, it is strikingly dark and concentrated, offering a savory aromatic profile of forest floor, eucalyptus, and black plum. The palate is defined by its remarkable structure and "balsamic" freshness—a hallmark of the estate—leading into a finish of immense grip and spice. While approachable with a long decant today, its real magic lies in its ability to evolve gracefully for decades.

Critical Acclaim:

94 Points, Wine Advocate:

“This comes from very low yielding vines, and it was foot trodden in lagar, matured in 5,000-liter oak vats for three to four years and was kept in bottle for another four years before being released.” - Luis Gutiérrez
