2023 Seguin-Manuel, Savigny-lès-Beaune "Montchenevoy"

Seguin-Manuel was founded in 1824 and given new life in 2004 by Thibaut Marion, whose family has roots in Beaune going back ten generations. Today it is an organic domaine and small-scale négociant based in Savigny-lès-Beaune, the village tucked into a side valley just north of Beaune. Savigny is one of the Côte de Beaune's best sources of value in red Burgundy, prized for wines that combine juicy fruit with earthy depth and real finesse.

"Montchenevoy" is a single-vineyard lieu-dit on the middle and upper slopes of Savigny, overlooking the valley of the Rhoin. Its reddish, iron-rich clay-limestone soils are scattered with broken limestone, giving good drainage and lending the Pinot Noir both density and mineral tension. The 2023 was harvested entirely by hand and sorted twice, in the vineyard and on a sorting table, then fermented with native yeasts and gentle punch-downs. It aged 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, about 15 to 20 percent new, and was bottled without fining or heavy filtration.

Why You'll Love It

  • A single-vineyard red Burgundy from an organic Côte de Beaune estate, offering classic Savigny charm and depth.
  • The nose shows dark wild cherry, black raspberry, and violets, with hints of forest floor and baking spice.
  • The palate is juicy and savory, with fine-grained tannins and a light touch of oak that frames rather than masks the fruit.
  • The finish is chalky and mineral, with lingering earthy notes and fresh acidity.
  • A versatile Burgundy for the dinner table now, with the structure to keep developing over the next decade.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at cool room temperature, between 58 and 62°F.
  • Decant for 30 to 45 minutes to let the floral perfume and red berry fruit unfold.
  • Pour into Burgundy stems to gather its delicate Pinot Noir aromatics.
  • Pair with roast duck breast in morel sauce, braised pork tenderloin, wild mushroom risotto, or roasted squab.
