2023 Domaine Philippe Gavignet, Nuits-Saint-Georges "Vieilles Vignes"
Forget the outdated stereotype that Nuits-Saint-Georges has to be tough, rustic, or hyper-tannic. Fourth-generation vigneron Philippe Gavignet works out of his tiny cellar in the center of town—right alongside legends like Henri Gouges and Robert Chevillon—crafting throwback, high-toned Pinot Noir defined by sheer elegance. We tasted this at the importer's Fall Trade tasting and followed it back at the office with dazzling results. Sourced from ancient vines planted between 1920 and 1954, these 70- to 100-year-old plots deliver serious density, structural depth, and supreme finesse.
The secret is all in the dirt and the extraordinary vine age. Rather than generic village plots, this comes from two historic lieux-dits: "Les Allots" (bordering 1er Crus on the Vosne-Romanée side) and "Les Belles Croix" (sitting directly adjacent to Les Pruliers, the most famous 1er Cru in the appellation). Aged in just 25% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it’s a Burghound’s dream—bursting with dark raspberry, wild cherry, crushed violet, black tea, and damp forest floor over a silky, minerally driven frame.
