Château Beaucastel

Behind The Wine: Château Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel, owned by the Perrin family since 1909, traces its roots to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel purchased land in Coudoulet, which remains part of the estate today. The property spans approximately 130 hectares, with around 100 hectares planted to vines, most within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

Beaucastel is known for producing rich, age-worthy wines that combine power with elegance. The Perrins follow organic and biodynamic practices and use whole-cluster fermentation where appropriate. The wines are aged in large oak foudres, allowing the galets roulés soils to shine. Mourvèdre provides a firm backbone in the reds, while Grenache contributes vibrant fruit. The 2022 vintage exemplifies the estate’s style with generous yet fresh fruit, balanced spice, and the characteristic notes of garrigue. Even in a year of high-quality wines across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Beaucastel stands out among its peers.

History

The estate takes its name from the historic Beaucastel family, who lived in Courthézon in the mid-16th century. The vineyards were first fully documented in 1832 during the inheritance of Etienne Gontard.

In the 19th century, the Phylloxera epidemic devastated vineyards across the Rhône Valley. At that time, the owner chose not to replant, and the property was sold. In 1909, Pierre Tramier purchased the estate and rebuilt the vineyards. His son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, later expanded the holdings, laying the foundation for the modern style of Beaucastel wines.

The Perrin family has managed the estate ever since. Jacques Perrin led the winery until 1978, when his sons Jean-Pierre and François Perrin assumed control. In 1990, the family partnered with wine importer Robert Haas to establish Tablas Creek Vineyard in California, bringing Beaucastel’s philosophy to the New World. In 2006, the estate joined Primum Familiae Vini, an association of elite family-owned wineries.

Over generations, Beaucastel has remained committed to terroir, traditional varietals, and sustainable farming. These principles have established it as a benchmark for Châteauneuf-du-Pape and one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential estates.

Vineyards

Château de Beaucastel’s vineyards cover roughly 100 hectares within a 130-hectare estate, making it one of the largest contiguous holdings in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Most of the vineyards lie in the historic Coudoulet and Chapouin lieux-dits near the northern edge of the appellation, an area known for some of the region’s most expressive and structured terroirs.

The soils are classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terrain, with a base of marine molasse and limestone overlain by a mix of sand, clay, and the signature galets roulés, large rounded stones left by ancient river and glacial action. These stones absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night, helping the vines ripen fully even in cooler years. The deeper clay and limestone provide drainage and mineral complexity, creating a foundation for both power and finesse in Beaucastel’s wines.

Beaucastel is renowned for planting all thirteen grape varieties permitted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Mourvèdre and Grenache form the backbone of many wines, but the estate also cultivates Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc, and Roussanne. In the red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, small amounts of white varieties are often included to add aromatic nuance and texture.

The vineyards are planted primarily in the traditional gobelet, or head-trained, style, with many blocks more than fifty years old. Deep roots help moderate vine vigor and concentrate flavors. Mourvèdre is especially prominent relative to many other estates, giving Beaucastel wines their distinctive structure, meatiness, and long aging potential.

Farming across the estate is organic and biodynamic, reflecting the Perrin family’s early commitment to soil health and biodiversity. Parcels are tended according to biodynamic principles, and no synthetic inputs are used. This approach ensures that the unique characteristics of each vineyard are fully expressed in the fruit.

The estate also includes vineyards outside the core Châteauneuf-du-Pape boundaries, particularly in the Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet area. Grapes from these sites are used in wines such as Coudoulet de Beaucastel, contributing freshness and pure Rhône character.

Together, Beaucastel’s soils, old vines, extensive varietal mix, and sustainable farming create vineyards that yield grapes capable of producing wines with remarkable complexity, structure, and a true sense of place.

Wine Releases

Château de Beaucastel is renowned for its meticulous approach to Châteauneuf-du-Pape winemaking. Each grape variety is vinified separately in large, old oak barrels called foudres, with only Syrah receiving some exposure to new oak. After individual fermentation, the wines are carefully blended to achieve the estate’s signature complexity and balance.

A distinctive feature of Beaucastel wines is the presence of subtle Brettanomyces notes, which can be perceived as earthy or spicy aromas. While often considered a flaw in other wines, this nuance is typical of wines with a high proportion of Mourvèdre and contributes to the estate’s unique Rhône Valley style.

The Château de Beaucastel portfolio includes six standout wines, comprising four Châteauneuf-du-Pape and two Côtes du Rhône offerings:
