There is no single definition of great Sangiovese. At its highest level, the grape can be hauntingly aromatic and weightless, immensely powerful and structured, or almost Burgundian in its transparency to place. This collection brings together three wines that have pushed those possibilities to their limits: Soldera, Siro Pacenti, and Montevertine.
These are not simply three of Tuscany’s most collectible bottles. Each represents a fiercely individual vision of what Sangiovese can become when convention takes a back seat to conviction.
For the serious Italian collector, this is not simply a three-bottle pack. It is a study of what happens when three of Tuscany’s greatest estates are given the same grape and refuse to make it the same way. From Montalcino to the high-elevation vineyards of Radda, the differences in place, philosophy, and winemaking are profound, yet each has produced a wine that stands among the defining expressions of modern Tuscany.
2021 Soldera, Case Basse Toscana IGP
The uncompromising icon. Gianfranco Soldera spent decades pursuing a vision of Sangiovese so singular that Case Basse ultimately walked away from the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG entirely. Today, the family continues that philosophy through obsessive farming, severe selection, long aging in traditional Slavonian oak, and virtually no concessions to modern winemaking fashion. The result is one of Italy’s true cult wines: extraordinarily perfumed, energetic, transparent, and capable of decades of evolution. The 2021 arrives with sensational early acclaim, including 97–99 points from Wine Advocate and 96–98 from Jeb Dunnuck.
2019 Siro Pacenti, Brunello di Montalcino “PS” Riserva
The powerhouse. If Soldera represents Sangiovese stripped to its philosophical core, Giancarlo Pacenti pushes the grape toward extraordinary intensity and precision. “PS” comes from a single parcel of old vines planted in the late 1950s at Pelagrilli and is produced only in exceptional vintages. Just 1,800 bottles were made in 2019. Dark, muscular, polished, and built around formidable old-vine structure, this is Brunello engineered at the absolute limit. No further PS Riserva will be released until the 2022 vintage.
2022 Montevertine, Le Pergole Torte
The purist. From the high-elevation vineyards of Radda in Chianti comes one of Sangiovese’s most revered expressions. Montevertine famously chose independence over changing its wine to satisfy appellation rules, and Le Pergole Torte became the estate’s ultimate statement: 100% Sangiovese shaped by altitude, limestone-rich soils, traditional fermentation, and patient élevage. The 2022 has already earned 98 points from both Wine Advocate and James Suckling and 97+ from Vinous, combining dark-fruited depth with the perfume, mineral tension, and vertical structure that have made Le Pergole Torte a global benchmark.
