A sommelier has two main tasks: Selecting wine and serving wine (there’s also the less-glamorous stocking/ storing component, but in this case, we’re leaving that part to you). The modus operandi for SommSelect Benchmarks is the same as that of a seasoned restaurant sommelier: The wines we choose for this pack are the kinds of wines we would want to showcase on a well-curated restaurant wine list.
The word “benchmarks” says it all: We spend an inordinate amount of time comparing and contrasting the great wines of the world (a tough job, for sure!), with the goal of establishing, yes, benchmarks: As in, what qualities do the best wines from Chablis share? Or, how does the current-release vintage of Brunello di Montalcino compare with those that came before? There’s a lot of wine out there: This is about separating the wheat from the chaff and finding the most outstanding, most authentic, most place-expressive wines available.
