Wintry Reds 4-Pack

Whether as the perfect gift for that someone on your list who loves bolder reds, or simply to have on hand for the chilly temps setting in, we’ve got you covered!

Just as the color palette outside is changing from light to dark, the wines finding their way to our tables this time of year are of the hardier sort. Let’s face it: Some red wines, delicious as they may be, don’t make much sense in the middle of July. But now is the time for those bolder, more savory reds to shine. For this four-pack, we assembled an all-star roster of favorites from our recent panel tastings, so you can have some proven winners readily at hand as Winter begins in earnest.

Here’s the lineup:

Monsecco, Colline Novaresi Nebbiolo “Pratogrande” 2016 (Piedmont, Italy)

It’s not just body we’re looking for, but structure and seasonally appropriate flavors. In this regard, the Nebbiolo grape is an ideal choice. “Pratogrande” smells like the season: warm spices, dried fruits, and a hint of smoke, like leaves burning in the distance. Grown in the hills north of Novara, in northern Piedmont, this is a wine to take refuge in, a wine that counters a biting chill by biting back. It is medium-bodied and tangy, with a gentle nip of tannin lending backbone. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, blood orange peel, tobacco, leather, tar, underbrush, and lots more are textbook Nebbiolo and just what we’re craving right now! Pair it with wild mushroom risotto and you’re winning Winter!

Domaine des Braves, Régnié “Macrinus” 2018 (Cru Beaujolais, France)

Loaded with granitic minerality and dark, wild-berry fruit character, “Macrinus” is Cru Beaujolais with an extra gear—or two! From 60-year-old vines within a two-acre plot that dates to Roman times, this is one of the most concentrated, profound expressions of Gamay you’ll ever taste—a lip-smacking mix of concentrated black/red fruits and notes of iron and stone. A tooth-staining pleasure that also boasts impeccable balance! This wine and an old-school coq au vin? Perfection!

Torre de Oña, Rioja Reserva 2014 (Rioja, Spain)

Long aging in oak barrels—20 months in an assortment of cooperage—gives this classic Rioja Reserva a distinctive hint of warm, wintry spice: notes of vanilla, nutmeg, and clove accent the succulent Tempranillo fruit in this classically styled Rioja Reserva. There’s plenty of power and a healthy dose of tannin to tackle fattier winter braises incorporating beef or lamb.

Domaine la Bouïssiere, Côtes du Rhône 2017 (Rhône Valley, France)
A warm-climate powerhouse for cold-weather sipping—as textured and enveloping as a down comforter! Crafted from 90% Grenache and reminiscent of top-tier Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this is one of the very best ‘pound-for-pound’ reds in the entire southern Rhône. The vines that supply this cuvée are in the Beaumes de Venise appellation and average 30 years of age, providing deeply concentrated Grenache and Syrah (10%) that is fermented and aged in concrete vats. Velvety tannins and aromas/flavors of wild berries, black licorice, and Provençal herbs make this a body-warming choice with slow-roasted pork shoulder. Enjoy!
