Master Somm Selection: A Study in Nebbiolo

No grape in the world demands more patience — or rewards it more generously — than Nebbiolo. The same variety that produces the most structured, age-worthy wines in Piedmont also yields some of the most ethereally perfumed and delicate reds on earth. This four-bottle collection is a vertical journey through the appellation hierarchy of the Langhe: from a village-level Langhe Nebbiolo that drinks like a young Barolo, to a single-cru Barbaresco of remarkable finesse, to two Barolos that show the grape at its most complete — one a multi-site village blend of exuberant fruit and crystalline structure, the other a single-cru expression from one of the most coveted and sought-after vineyards in the entire denomination. Drink them in order. Decant generously. Take notes.

Renzo Castella, Langhe Nebbiolo "Madonnina," Diano d'Alba, Piedmont, Italy

"The Insider's Nebbiolo"

Renzo Castella farms a three-generation family estate in Diano d'Alba, selling his wines almost exclusively to sommeliers in Italy — no social media, no export agent, just a tiny stone cellar next to his parents' house and a devoted following among those who know. The "Madonnina" draws from a limestone vein that runs directly from Serralunga d'Alba — the same mother rock that underpins some of Barolo's most powerful crus — giving this Langhe Nebbiolo a structural backbone that belies its modest appellation. Fermented and aged in older neutral oak, it is a wine of purity and perfume rather than power: dried roses, truffles, delicately sweet cherry, and a mineral persistence that lingers long after the glass is empty. Locals call wines like this "Baroleggiano" — not technically Barolo, but tasting unmistakably of it. Gambero Rosso and Slow Wine have taken notice. Decant for fifteen minutes and serve at 58–62°F.

Pair with: Pappardelle al ragù bolognese, carne cruda all'albese, or a simple pizza bianca.

Azienda Agricola Ronchi, Barbaresco "Ronchi," Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy

"The Soul of Barbaresco"

The Ronchi family has been farming this corner of Barbaresco since the late nineteenth century, and the estate's history is woven into the fabric of the appellation itself — in 1975, Alfonso Rocca's Barbaresco was selected as the national prototype at Alba's AIS Congress, a recognition that cemented Ronchi's place among the denomination's founding estates. Today, fourth-generation Giancarlo Rocca farms sixteen hectares sustainably across the Ronchi cru and neighboring sites, vinifying only estate fruit with hands-on care: no herbicides, minimal tillage, and native yeasts throughout. The 2022 Barbaresco "Ronchi" draws from fifty-year-old vines at 250 meters elevation, southeast-exposed for dawn warmth and the diurnal cooling that defines this amphitheater-shaped hillside. After twelve to fifteen days of native fermentation, the wine rests twenty-two to twenty-four months in large Slavonian botti, emerging with the floral lift, red cherry, and herb-inflected finesse that is Ronchi's signature — and a freshness that is all the more remarkable given the heat of the 2022 vintage. Decant two to three hours.

Pair with: Braised veal, wild boar ragù, risotto ai funghi, or tajarin al ragù.

Virna, Barolo "Noi," Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

"Barolo's Most Exuberant Expression"

Virna Borgogno's family has been growing grapes in Barolo since 1720 — a full century before the wine was even recognized as a category. When Virna established her own identity in 2001, she brought with her some of the most prized vineyard holdings in the denomination and a philosophy that honors tradition while embracing a more expressive, fruit-forward style. "Noi" — meaning "us" in Italian — draws from multiple sites across the Barolo commune, where Nebbiolo subvarieties Lampia and Michet grow in densely planted vineyards on clay, limestone, and silt soils. Southeast and southwest exposures ensure optimal ripening for this notoriously late-maturing variety, while thirty- to fifty-year-old vines contribute remarkable concentration. The Wine Advocate awarded it 93 points, noting a "classic Nebbiolo nose with dried redcurrant, dusty licorice, bitter chocolate and candied orange peel studded with cloves." It is approachable now — with an intoxicating perfume of roses and crystalline red fruits — yet built to develop magnificently through 2040. Decant thirty minutes.

Pair with: Pappardelle with wild mushroom ragù, osso buco, or roasted lamb with rosemary.

Diego Morra, Barolo Cru "Monvigliero," Verduno, Piedmont, Italy

"The Most Coveted Cru in Barolo"

Monvigliero is Verduno's crown jewel and one of the most sought-after single vineyards in the entire Barolo denomination — a place where the cooling nocturnal air currents that descend from the Alps along the Tanaro River create a dramatic diurnal shift that preserves the high-toned, spicy aromatics — white pepper, red currant, dried rose — that have made this cru the obsession of serious collectors worldwide. Diego Morra is Monvigliero's largest single owner, farming four hectares of heirloom vines averaging forty years of age using organic practices on the limestone-rich Marne di Sant'Agata soils that give the wine its signature silky, weightless texture. The 2019 is classic Nebbiolo transparency: a brilliant, translucent garnet that erupts immediately with cracked white pepper, blood orange, wild strawberry, and sandalwood. On the palate, fine-grained tannins and a salt-streaked mineral finish reward sixty to ninety minutes of aeration. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 95 points: "Each element speaks of finesse rather than raw power, bringing energy and vibrancy to every sip. A serious wine showing both immediate appeal and future promise through its purity and thoughtful craftsmanship." Vibrant and expressive now, this wine possesses the structural architecture to evolve gracefully for two decades.

Pair with: Braised short ribs, tajarin al ragù, or aged Castelmagno cheese.
