Kalleske, "Moppa" Shiraz

Barossa Valley Shiraz: All wine drinkers know it at least peripherally, as it is one of the most readily identifiable combinations of place and grape in the world. At the same time, however, when’s the last time you had a Barossa Shiraz? If it has been a while, is it because the so-called “critter wines” (once a fixture on every wine-store shelf) scared you away?

Well, it’s time to go back—and to recognize the viticultural history and exceptional terroir of Barossa. This region, which has never experienced an attack of phylloxera, is home to some of the world’s oldest surviving vineyard plantings, whose exceptionally deep roots alleviate water stress and deliver incredibly concentrated fruit in this hot, dry climate.

Moppa is a sub-district of the Barossa Valley located in the region’s northwest corner, and the Kalleske farm and vineyard has been headquartered here since 1853. The estate was also the site of the local public school (1873-1935), which members of the Kalleske family attended. The triumph of their 2020 “Moppa” bottling is that it oozes Syrah/Shiraz character without being over-extracted or sweet. There’s lots of roasted meat/black pepper savor to complement the saturated black plum and mulberry notes. Adding to the rich tapestry are notes of baking spice, mocha, and brandied cherries. This is a voluptuous red to try alongside BBQ ribs or brisket slathered in sauce (trust us!).
