Château La Vaisinerie, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion

Sometimes spelled “Puysseguin,” this is one of four village-appended AOCs that extend to the north and northeast of Saint-Émilion itself. The soils are effectively the same clay/limestone mixture found in Saint-Émilion, and Merlot covers 80% of the vineyard area in the appellation. Of those four satellite villages (others include Lussac and Montagne), Puisseguin has the strictest quality-control regulations for its wines.

Wine broker Alain Moses (proprietor of a Bordeaux négociant called Twins), acquired this small estate in 2019. The property is relatively small by Bordeaux standards, encompassing 25 hectares (13 of which are vineyards). The estate, which dates to the 17th century, is in the process of converting to organic viticulture. The clay/limestone soil composition in the Vaisinerie vineyard favors Merlot, which represents 90% of this blend alongside 10% Cabernet Franc. Grapes are subjected to careful sorting post-harvest to select only the healthiest bunches, after which they are fermented in thermoregulated concrete vats. Half the wine is aged in French oak barriques (1/3rd new) for 12-14 months; the rest is aged in tank.

Deep garnet red in color, this wine is well-concentrated but elegant and lifted, with good acidity and fine-grained tannins. Some red fruits (cranberry, cherry) mingle with darker ones such as Damson plum and blackberry, all layered with notes of tobacco, herbs, and licorice. There is a palpable earthiness, with crushed-stone minerality balancing the plush fruit.
