2024 Weingut Högl, Grüner Veltliner Federspiel "J&G", Wachau

Weingut Högl is a respected family estate at the far western edge of Austria's Wachau valley, in the Spitz district. The winery is run by Josef Högl and his son Georg, whose initials give this cuvée its name. Their vineyards sit on steep, hand-terraced slopes where cold air moving down from the Waldviertel plateau meets the warmth rising off the Danube, a contrast that shapes the tension typical of the best Wachau wines.

The Federspiel designation in the Wachau covers medium-bodied dry wines with moderate alcohol, generally between 11.5% and 12.5%. This 2024 "J&G" is fermented entirely in stainless steel, a choice that keeps the focus on the vineyard's cool-climate acidity and the flinty minerality that comes from the estate's rocky, high-altitude sites rather than on any winemaking imprint.

Why You'll Love It

  • A benchmark, high-altitude expression of Wachau Grüner Veltliner with real tension and purity.
  • Classic varietal character: white pepper, green apple, lentil, and fresh lemon oil.
  • Stainless steel aging keeps the finish crisp, slatey, and mouthwatering.
  • Federspiel's moderate alcohol makes it an easy, versatile pour.

How To Serve It

  • Serve well chilled, between 46°F and 50°F.
  • No decanting needed. It's best straight from the bottle.
  • All-purpose stems suit its citrus and white pepper aromatics.
  • Excellent with grilled trout, sushi, asparagus, or fresh goat cheese.
