2024 Passopisciaro, "Contrada C" (Chiappemacine), Terre Siciliane IGT

When the visionary Andrea Franchetti arrived on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in 2000, he saw what few others did: an ancient, high-altitude landscape of abandoned terraces and century-old vines capable of rivaling the world's finest terroirs. His pioneering work at Passopisciaro proved that treating the volcano’s distinct contrade as micro-climates could unlock wines of Burgundian nuance and weightless power. Today, that legacy is carried forward with equal passion by his son, Benjamin Franchetti. Sourced from 80-year-old vines at 550 meters elevation, Chiappemacine sits on a rare sandstone-limestone outcrop capped with thin volcanic soil. This unique geology makes it the most open, lush, and immediately aromatic single-vineyard bottling in the Passopisciaro lineup. The nose unfurls with dusty dried roses, balsamic spice, cedar shavings, and ripe dried black cherries, driving a cascade of wild berry fruit through a core of stimulating acidity and silky, rounded tannins.

Critical Acclaim:
Vinous Wine Media Logo
94 Points, Vinous Media:
"The 2024 Contrada C slowly evolves with a dusty bouquet of dried roses, balsamic spice, cedar shavings and dried black cherries. It's lifted and graceful in feel, with stimulating acidity and a cascade of ripe wild berry fruits that sprint across the palate. Structure dominates the long, staining finish as edgy tannins mingle with a bump of residual acidity."

Why You'll Love It

  • The Softest Entry Point: Of the three single-site releases, Chiappemacine offers the most supple tannins and immediate charm out of the gate.

  • Unique Dual Geology: Combines Etna’s iconic volcanic minerality with rare sandstone-limestone freshness and perfumed floral lift.

  • Exclusive Single-Site Scarcity: A true collector's release from old vines, crafted by the estate that sparked the modern Mount Etna renaissance.

How To Serve It

  • Ideal Temperature: Serve at 58°F–62°F (14°C–16°C) in wide-bowled Burgundy stems.

  • Decanting: A light 45-to-60-minute decant allows the balsamic spice and floral aromatics to bloom.

  • Food Pairing: Sensational alongside roasted duck breast, braised pork shoulder, or wild mushroom tagliatelle.
