2024 Domaine Xavier Gérard, Saint-Joseph "La Combe de Saint-Pierre"
Xavier Gérard is a legend-in-the-making, and this is your chance to secure his wines before the rest of the world prices you out. Operating from his family’s home base in Condrieu, Xavier has built a devoted following for his pure, traditionalist Northern Rhône benchmark expressions. We’ve tasted this 2024 "La Combe de Saint-Pierre" twice in the last 30 days—most recently alongside Xavier at an importer event in San Francisco—and it blew us away. While his flagship Côte-Rôties demand years in the cellar, this single-site Saint-Joseph hits the glass prettier, fresher, and far more accessible today without sacrificing an ounce of serious pedigree.
The secret lies in the dirt. Grown on steep slopes in Saint-Joseph’s northernmost sector, these 35-to-45-year-old Syrah vines sit in a blend of decomposed granite and mica-schist—the exact same rare geological matrix that defines Côte-Rôtie's legendary Côte Brune. By farming organically and keeping winemaking old-school, Xavier captures that signature iron-rich mineral drive and muscle at roughly half the cost of a single-site Côte-Rôtie. It's a brilliant lesson in terroir from a father-to-son legacy at the top of its game.
Pop the cork and you're greeted by a gorgeous, unapologetically wild Syrah. Intensely aromatic notes of cracked black pepper, fresh violets, and smoked bacon fat lead into a dark, meaty, savage-like core of blackberry and olive tapenade.Fine-grained tannins and bright natural acidity lift the wine’s rugged intensity, carrying the savory spice through a long,mineral-driven finish.
