Éric Louis traces his Sancerre roots to 1890, when his great-grandmother Pauline pioneered domaine-bottling in Sancerre. The family's been working their 60 different plots in Thauvenay, Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre, and Vinon ever since.
Domaine Curot, originally started by Éric’s sister, is in Thauvenay, where the Louis family farms prime hillside vineyards rich in both Kimmeridgian limestone and silex. They've been dedicated to organics for over a decade, and became HVE3 certified in 2019, and fully organic under Ecocert since 2023.
The 2024 vintage shows all the hallmarks of serious Sancerre: bright pale yellow with green hints, that exotic, citrusy nose that invites another sip, and a palate that's both generous and clean. It's got the structure to age 3-5 years, but good luck keeping it that long.
Why You’ll Love It:
Textbook Sancerre: The Louis family’s huge mosaic of vineyards across Sancerre gives them total control over the quality of their final blend. In 2024, this wine leaps from the glass with notes of elderflower, green melon, pink grapefruit, and lime blossom, with a snappy, refreshing finish.
Family legacy: 130+ years of accumulated vineyard curation and winemaking wisdom are in every bottle. Éric Louis harvests at night for freshness, presses gently, ferments cold, and bottles under nitrogen to limit sulfur additions and protect the wines against oxidation.
Fair pricing: At $34 ($29 by the sixer), you're getting established Sancerre quality and avoiding the insidious price inflation that has been plaguing Sancerre for years now.
How to Serve It:
Serve at 46-48°F in white wine stems.
Drink now through 2029.
Classic move: fresh oysters or Crottin de Chavignol cheese. Pro move: try it with anything involving lime and white fish. The soothing green melon notes would pair brilliantly with something like Thai green curry.
