2024 Artuke, Rioja Blanco "Trascuevas", Rioja

Bodegas Artuke is a family estate in Baños de Ebro, Rioja Alavesa, with more than a century of grape-growing history. Roberto de Miguel began bottling under the family's own label in 1991; his sons Arturo and Kike took over winemaking and viticulture in 2009 and 2011, and the estate's name, Artuke, is a portmanteau of their two first names. The brothers farm roughly 25 hectares of old, ungrafted bush vines across Baños de Ebro, Samaniego, and Ábalos, working organically, using native yeasts, and avoiding new oak in favor of large, neutral vessels. Arturo has become one of the region's most vocal advocates for terroir-driven, village-level Rioja.

Trascuevas draws fruit from three villages, Baños de Ebro, Samaniego, and Ábalos, blending 90% Viura with small amounts of Malvasía and Palomino Fino. The grapes are hand-harvested, double-sorted, and fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts before ten months of lees aging split between old 500-liter French oak barrels and concrete. The result is a textural, saline white with real freshness and none of the heavy oak influence more common in traditional Rioja Blanco.

Why You'll Love It

  • A textural, food-friendly Rioja Blanco built from old bush vines across three villages.
  • Fresh fennel and wildflower aromas with a touch of toasted almond and salted lemon.
  • A creamy, silky palate carried by real freshness.
  • A mineral finish with a subtle anise note.
  • Made by a brother duo farming organically and bottling under their own family name since 1991.
  • An excellent, versatile everyday white for the table.

How To Serve It

  • Serve chilled at 50-54°F.
  • No decanting necessary.
  • Pour into an all-purpose white wine glass to let the lees-driven texture show.
  • Pair with grilled octopus, smoked paprika aioli, and charred padrón peppers, or with roasted white fish and legumes.
