2023 Wagner-Stempel, Siefersheim "Porphyr" Dry Riesling

In the far western reaches of Rheinhessen, where Siefersheim presses up against the Nahe, Daniel Wagner has spent decades making a compelling case for a side of the region most drinkers never encounter: high, cool, wind-brushed slopes fractured with volcanic porphyry—also called rhyolite—rather than the soft, generous textures typically associated with Rheinhessen. Wagner-Stempel is a ninth-generation family estate, VDP member since 2004 and EU-certified organic, with Daniel Wagner farming and vinifying a compact 24.4-acre holding. His wines are defined by Siefersheim’s severe geology and marginal climate: sharply etched acidity, saline drive, herbal lift, and an unmistakable smoky-stone character. The 2023 Porphyr is the estate’s essential calling card, a dry, 12.5%-alcohol Riesling built around apricot, red vineyard peach, mint, lemon balm, and a long, mineral finish. Selective hand-harvesting, restrained cellar work, and maturation split between stainless steel and traditional large German oak preserve both its tensile fruit and the unmistakable signature minerality.

Here is the part that makes this bottle exceptional: Porphyr is not merely a generic village Riesling. Its fruit is drawn from the best parcels of Höllberg and Heerkretz, Wagner-Stempel’s two Siefersheim VDP.GROSSE LAGE sites—the German equivalent of grand-cru vineyards—and it is deliberately bottled below their individual GG labels. In other words, “declassified” does not imply inferior fruit; it describes Wagner’s exacting internal selection. Parcels intended for the flagship single-vineyard Grosses Gewächs bottlings are instead combined under the Siefersheim Ortswein designation when the estate believes they will make a more complete, immediately expressive village wine than a site-specific GG. The result is a rare kind of value: the volcanic tension, salt, and structural authority of Heerkretz and Höllberg, but in a wine designed to show its brilliance earlier and offered at a fraction of the price of the two GGs. For 2023—a warm, fast-moving vintage that demanded meticulous timing and selection—this is a particularly vivid expression: concentrated enough for the cellar, but already electric with citrus, stone fruit, wild herbs, and smoldering porphyry.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Grand-cru DNA, village-wine access: This is sourced from parcels in Höllberg and Heerkretz, two of Germany’s great Riesling sites, yet sold as a Siefersheim Ortswein rather than as a costly single-vineyard GG.

  • A true volcanic Riesling: Porphyry-rich soils lend the wine its smoky, stony, saline authority—an incisive counterpoint to its peach, apricot, citrus, and herb-toned fruit.

  • Serious structure without austerity: At 12.5% alcohol, 2023 has the density and concentration to evolve, but its high-toned acidity and minerality make it tremendously satisfying right now.

How To Serve It

  • Temperature: Serve at 48–52°F. Too cold and you mute the red-peach fruit, herbal detail, and layered mineral finish; a few minutes in the glass will reveal its full dimension.

  • Glassware: Use a medium-to-large white-wine glass, ideally one with enough bowl size to capture the wine’s aromatic complexity and allow its texture to broaden.

  • Food and timing: Decant briefly—or simply open 20–30 minutes before dinner—then bring it to the table with roast chicken, pork schnitzel, grilled shrimp, sushi, or dishes built around spring vegetables, herbs, and fresh cheeses. It will drink beautifully now, but its acidity and extract should reward cellaring through at least 2027
