2023 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Grosse Lage

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt is one of Germany's oldest wine estates, with winegrowing roots tracing back to 1349. Purchased by the Reh family in 1978 and shaped for decades by the late Annegret Reh-Gartner, the estate today is run by managing director Dr. Karsten Weyand and cellar master David Nicolay, farming roughly 46 hectares across the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer, including eleven VDP Grosse Lage sites and the monopole Josephshöfer.

This Kabinett comes from Scharzhofberg, the legendary Grand Cru-equivalent vineyard above Wiltingen on the Saar, planted on steep slate and loess slopes. The 2023 bottling is a fruity, off-dry style with real residual sweetness balanced by the site's signature racing acidity, at a light 10.5% alcohol.

Why You'll Love It

  • A fruity Kabinett from Scharzhofberg, one of the Saar's most legendary vineyard sites.
  • Ripe orchard and stone fruit with a smoky, flinty edge from the vineyard's high iron content.
  • A light-bodied, off-dry style balanced by racing, saline acidity.
  • A long, mineral-driven finish that lingers.
  • From an estate with over 675 years of winegrowing history.
  • A versatile, low-alcohol white for both sipping and spicy food.

How To Serve It

  • Serve chilled at 45-48°F.
  • No decanting necessary.
  • Pour into a tall, tapered Riesling glass.
  • Pair with a green Thai curry with shrimp or Sichuan mapo tofu, where the wine's sweetness and acidity tame the heat, or with pan-seared foie gras.
