2023 Maison les Alexandrins, Crozes-Hermitage

Maison Les Alexandrins is a modern négociant partnership in the Northern Rhône founded by Nicolas Jaboulet and Alexandre Caso, built to source and vinify fruit from exceptional vineyard sites across the region while keeping a contemporary, precise style. Alongside their sister estate bottlings under the Domaine label, the Maison range is built from purchased fruit chosen for its character and consistency, blended to a house style that favors freshness and immediacy over sheer weight.

This Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is 100% Syrah, drawn primarily from Beaumont-Monteux, which contributes generosity and precision, and Les Pends near Mercurol, which adds depth and acidity, with fruit coming off a mix of alluvial plain soils, stone terraces, and granite slopes on south-facing sites that catch the cooling Mistral winds. The grapes see a pre-fermentation cold maceration to build fruit character, then macerate and ferment for around twenty days with pump-overs early on and punch-downs toward the end. Aging runs ten months in a mix of conical vats and demi-muids, a combination chosen to round out the tannins without adding obvious oak flavor.

Why You'll Love It

  • A forward, charming Crozes-Hermitage that over-delivers for the price, with real Northern Rhône character.
  • The nose mixes ripe red and black berries with peppery herbs, incense, and a savory, floral lift.
  • Medium-bodied and silky, with smooth, well-managed tannins and a fresh, spicy finish.
  • Approachable now with no need to wait, though it has enough structure to hold for a few years.
  • A versatile, food-friendly red that's equally at home on a weeknight table or alongside something off the grill.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at 60-64°F.
  • Decant for about 30 minutes to let the peppery, floral notes open up.
  • Pour into a Bordeaux-style glass.
  • Pair with grilled lamb merguez sausages and charred peppers, or anything with a peppery char.
