2023 Envínate, Lousas "Viñas de Aldea", Ribeira Sacra DO

60-to-80-year-old vines, dizzying Galician slate terraces, and electric Atlantic energy.

If you want to understand why sommelieres and serious collectors are currently obsessed with Spain’s cool-climate Atlantic coast, this bottle is your masterclass. While warm-inland reds rely on heavy alcohol and high-impact oak, the dramatic, river-carved cliffs of Ribeira Sacra yield wines defined by jaw-dropping verticality, crunchy red fruit, and raw mineral tension. Here, the superstar winemaking quad known as Envínate ("wine yourself") farms ancient, 60-to-80-year-old vines clinging to terrifyingly steep slate terraces (lousas). Predominantly Mencía co-planted with rare native Atlantic heirlooms, 100% whole-cluster foot-treading, and neutral oak aging create a wine that drinks like a wild, mountain-grown hybrid of Northern Rhône Syrah and top-flight Cru Beaujolais.

In the glass, it shines a vibrant, translucent violet-ruby. The nose explodes with fresh pomegranate, wild mountain berries, cracked black pepper, blood orange peel, and crushed slate, framed by exotic violet florals and a whisper of damp peat. The palate is light-on-its-feet yet deeply concentrated, driving its crisp red-fruit core through a laser beam of ocean-breeze acidity and fine, graphite-tinged tannins. Unfined, unfiltered, and brimming with energetic soul, it offers instant gratification today while possessing the structure to evolve over the next five to seven years.

95 Points, Wine Advocate:

"The bottled 2023 Lousas Viñas de Aldea is perfumed, intoxicating and showy, with a floral note of dried rose petals that I also found in the Misturado from this same vintage. It's a blend of grapes, 80% Mencía and the rest a field blend of reds and whites, Brancellao, Merenzao, Alicante, Grao Negro, Mouratón, Jerez, Godello, etc., and zones, Amandi, Quiroga and Ribeiras del Sil with lots of gneiss and also slate and granite, depending on the plot. The grapes were picked between the first and 23rd of September, a very long harvest because of the rain. It fermented with 70% to 100% full clusters in concrete or plastic bins, and 30% of the volume remained in concrete and the rest matured in used barrels of different sizes, from 225 to 500 liters, for 11 months with lees and without racking. There's also a flinty smokiness that gives the wine a different twist. It's stunning and incredibly priced."

Why You'll Love It

  • The Cutting Edge of Spanish Wine: Captures the wildly popular "Atlantic Spanish" style—vibrant, low-alcohol, pepper-spiced, and endlessly drinkable.

  • Heroic Mountain Terroir: Sourced from ancient cliffside vines that can only be farmed entirely by hand, delivering raw, slate-driven complexity you can't fake.

  • Insane Versatility at the Table: Low oak intrusion and racy acidity allow it to bridge the gap between rich seafood, cured meats, and game.

How To Serve It

  • Ideal Temperature: Give it a light cellar chill and serve at 58°F–62°F in Burgundy stems to accentuate its high-toned florals.

  • Decanting / Prep: Pop and pour, or give it 20 minutes in a decanter to let the cracked pepper and slate minerality bloom.

  • Food Pairing: Pair alongside grilled octopus (Pulpo a la Gallega), roasted pork shoulder with smoked paprika, or wild mushroom risotto.
