2023 Domaine Philippe Gavignet, Nuits-Saint-Georges "Vieilles Vignes"
Domaine Philippe Gavignet is a fifth-generation family estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, where Philippe now works alongside his children Benoît and Élodie. Nuits-Saint-Georges sits at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits and is known for some of the firmest, most deeply fruited Pinot Noir in Burgundy. Gavignet's style softens those edges without losing the village's backbone, with sustainably farmed (lutte raisonnée) clay-limestone parcels and a gentle hand in the cellar.
The "Vieilles Vignes" draws on estate parcels around the village planted with vines averaging 50 to 80 years old. Old vines give small crops of small, thick-skinned berries, and that shows in the wine's concentration. The 2023 was hand-harvested, fully destemmed, and fermented with native yeasts in open vats before 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, roughly 30% new. The result is classic Nuits structure delivered with real polish.
Why You'll Love It
Village Nuits-Saint-Georges with old-vine depth, balancing firm structure with refined, velvety tannins.
Dark cherry, black raspberry, and violet petals on the nose, with a note of cocoa nib.
Forest floor and subtle leather layer under a core of ripe black fruit, lifted by bright acidity.
A long, savory finish with fine-grained tannins and no rustic edges.
Drinking well now with a decant, with the stuffing to reward cellaring through the late 2030s.
How To Serve It
Serve at cool room temperature, between 58°F and 62°F.
Decant for about 45 minutes to let the dark fruit and earthy aromatics open up.
Pour into Burgundy stems to gather its floral, spicy perfume.
Pair with seared duck breast with morel jus, roasted pork tenderloin with wild mushrooms, or a slow-braised beef bourguignon.
