2023 Domaine Karanika, Cuvée Rosé Brut, Amyndeon

The 2023 Domaine Karanika Cuvée Rosé Brut is the sort of sparkling wine that completely recalibrates expectations for Greek wine: nervy, finely structured, and unmistakably Mediterranean, yet built on the cool-climate tension and bottle-fermented seriousness of great traditional-method wine. A vivid, dry rosé made principally from ungrafted Xinomavro, with a small contribution of Limniona, from the high, cold Amyntaio plateau in northwestern Greece.

Domaine Karanika began in 2004–2006, when Dutch publishing professionals Laurens Hartman and Annette van Kampen traded their former careers for Amyntaio, the northern Greek appellation tied to Laurens’ Greek Vlach family—the Karanikas. Their objective was unusually focused from the start: make world-class, traditional-method sparkling wine from indigenous grapes, particularly Xinomavro, in a place capable of delivering naturally high acidity and genuine terroir definition. At roughly 650 meters above sea level, Amyntaio’s continental conditions, long season, and sand-clay soils with calcareous influence give Xinomavro the poise it needs for bubbles: fruit ripens slowly, acidity remains incisive, and the wines retain freshness without sacrificing savory complexity. Karanika’s sparkling program gained wider international momentum after a placement at Eleven Madison Park in 2016, when it was rate the top restaurant in the world. Since then, demand has always outpaced production.

Why You'll Love It

  • Traditional-method production, extended lees contact, brisk acidity, and firm structure make this far more than a simple celebratory pink bubble; it has the texture and gastronomic range of a fine Blanc de Noirs.

  • The near-total reliance on ungrafted Xinomavro gives the wine its distinctive profile: wild red berries, sour cherry, delicate floral lift, citrusy cut, and a lightly tannic backbone that makes every sip feel vivid and grown-up.

  •  Karanika’s organic, biodynamic approach is not a marketing afterthought—The wine tastes alive: transparent, energetic, and quietly complex rather than overly polished

How To Serve It

  • Serve between 45–48°F  in an all-purpose white-wine stem or tulip-shaped sparkling glass.
  • Extremely versatile on the table. From simple snacks and starters like salty almonds, charcuterie, or creamy cheese to grilled calamari, shrimp with lemon and herbs, salmon, lobster pasta, roast chicken.
