2022 The Unturned Stone, Zinfandel "Gianoli Ranch", Mendocino Ridge
The Unturned Stone is a boutique, low-intervention project led by winemakers Erin Mitchell and Randy Schock, focused on organic, high-altitude vineyards along Northern California's coast. Gianoli Ranch is situated in the tiny, extreme Mendocino Ridge AVA, the only non-contiguous AVA in the U.S., where vineyards must sit above 1,200 feet elevation to qualify. Perched above the Pacific fog line, this dry-farmed historic site features old Zinfandel vines rooted in fractured sandstone soils.
The 2022 "Gianoli Ranch" Zinfandel was fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and aged in neutral French oak barrels. Unfiltered and un-fined, it combines coastal ridge freshness with mountain intensity: dark brambly berries, wild blackberries, pine needles, crushed granite, and black pepper, backed by bright acidity and fine-grained tannins.
