WHERE IT GROWS
Set in the rolling, sunlit plains of Alto Alentejo and near Portugal’s famed cork forests and olive groves, the vineyards for “ALF” are blessed with a mosaic of granite, clay, and slate soils. Cooled by Mediterranean breezes and bathed in sunlight, the vines flourish, producing Alfrocheiro grapes that brim with freshness, depth, aromatics and complexity.

WHO MADE IT
In 2004, the Agricultural Societies of Antas and Monte Barrão, two long-established agricultural cooperatives from Alto Alentejo, partnered with the famed ‘Flying Winemaker’ Peter Bright, to create Terra d’Alter. This partnership immediately combined deep regional and agricultural heritage with the foremost state of the art winemaking expertise of its time. In 2021, Susana Esteban, one of Portugal’s most renowned winemakers, joined the team and is now leading the way for the next generation.  Susana is the first woman to have received the “Winemaker of the Year” award from Revista de Vinhos in 2012 and was recently named “Producer of the Year” in 2022, while at the helm of Terra d’Alter.

HOW IT’S MADE
Hand-harvested grapes undergo a pre-fermentation, two-day cold maceration, with partial whole-bunch inclusion for added nuance. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by a non traditional extended 3 day maceration. The wine is then aged for ten months in American oak barrels before bottling.

WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Juicy cherry ripe red fruit and a touch of spice leap from the glass. Bright acidity and silky tannins create a wine that is both energetic and refined on the palate. Fresh, energetic and pure with a long lingering and elegant finish, this is Alentejo at its best.
