2022 Mount Langi Ghiran, Shiraz “Talus”, Grampians

Mount Langi Ghiran is an iconic estate located in the cool-climate Grampians region of Victoria, Australia. The winery is globally renowned for producing some of the country’s most distinct, complex, and pepper-driven Shiraz, benefiting from the dramatic granite backdrop and high-altitude, wind-swept amphitheater of the Mount Langi vineyard. The "Talus" bottling represents an ultra-premium, single-block expression named after the ancient granite rubble—or talus—that has tumbled down the mountainside over millennia. These rocky, well-drained soils force the vines to struggle, yielding tiny, intensely concentrated berries packed with mineral tension and aromatics.

The 2022 "Talus" Shiraz is a masterclass in cool-climate Australian winemaking, capturing the elegance and natural high acidity of a balanced growing season in the Grampians. Hand-picked from specific low-yielding blocks, the fruit underwent open-top fermentation with a carefully measured portion of whole clusters to enhance its floral perfume and spice profile. The wine was then matured in French oak puncheons to build structure without smothering the delicate fruit. The 2022 vintage displays an extraordinary juxtaposition of power and grace, delivering a tightly coiled red that seamlessly integrates dark forest berries, cracked black pepper, and granite minerality.

Why You’ll Love it

  • It is a benchmark example of cool-climate Victorian Shiraz, leaning closer to an elite, savory Northern Rhône Syrah than a warm-climate, high-alcohol Barossa style.

  • The 2022 vintage offers incredible focus and aromatic purity, exploding with notes of dark blackberries, wild blueberries, crushed black peppercorns, violets, and sweet bay leaf.

  • The palate is silken yet firmly structured, carrying a dense core of black fruit lift that feels weightless and energetic across the tongue.

  • Fine-grained, chalky tannins and a vibrant line of natural acidity give this wine a long, chiseled finish dominated by graphite and savory wood spice.

  • While extremely compelling and complex in its youth, this single-block bottling is built with the cellaring capacity to evolve gracefully over decades.

How To Serve It

  • Serve this wine at a cool room temperature between 60°F and 64°F to keep the delicate floral and black pepper aromas tightly focused.

  • We recommend a generous 1 to 1.5-hour decant to allow the youthful, tightly wound mountain structure to relax and let the aromatics unfurl.

  • Pour into appropriate stemware to provide the broad, expressive bouquet ample space to open up.

  • This savory, pepper-accented Shiraz pairs magnificently with rich meats, including roasted venison loin, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, or a slow-cooked beef daube.
