2022 Domaine Bosquet des Papes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape "À la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père"

Since 1860, five generations of the Boiron family have shaped Domaine Bosquet des Papes into one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most respected traditionalist estates. Emmanuel Boiron planted the first vines, and his descendants Joseph-Victor and Joseph expanded the holdings and founded Clos Chantemerle in 1936. In 1966, Maurice Boiron enlarged the property to 27 hectares and gave it the name it carries today. Since 1995, Maurice's son Nicolas and his wife Jeanne-Claire have continued the family legacy, pairing modern technical knowledge with deep respect for tradition to craft wines that reflect the true character of this celebrated appellation.

“À la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père” (“In Honor of My Grandfather”) is the domaine's tribute cuvée and its most concentrated expression of old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is sourced from a single parcel of 60- to 70-year-old vines in the Gardioles lieu-dit, in the northern part of the appellation, where clay-rich soil replaces the galets roulés found elsewhere on the property. Grapes are picked at full over-ripeness, roughly half the crop is de-stemmed, and the fruit undergoes a multi-day cold soak before a patient, roughly 35-day fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats with daily punch-downs, délestages, and pump-overs. The wine is then aged 12 to 15 months in large oak foudres and demi-muids, with only 6,000 to 8,000 bottles produced in any given vintage.

Why You'll Love It

  • Sourced from 60- to 70-year-old vines, delivering the density and layered complexity that only old-vine fruit can provide.
  • A rare clay-soil parcel within the domaine's holdings, giving the wine more structure and grip than Bosquet des Papes' galets-roulés cuvées.
  • Built almost entirely on Grenache Noir (98%), rounded out by a small addition of Cinsault and Clairette for lift and perfume.
  • Produced in tiny quantities of just 6,000 to 8,000 bottles a year, making each vintage a limited allocation.
  • Aged in large oak foudres and demi-muids rather than small barrels, preserving fruit purity and adding texture without heavy oak influence.
  • Carries the weight of five generations of Boiron family winemaking, one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most consistent and traditional addresses.

How To Serve It

  • Serve at 62-65°F to let the wine's spice and dark fruit fully open up.
  • Decant for 1 to 2 hours if drinking young; this cuvée will continue to develop through 2035.
  • Pour into Burgundy stems to concentrate the aromatics of this full-bodied, Grenache-based red.
  • Pair with braised short rib, wild boar ragù, or another slow-cooked, richly sauced dish that can stand up to its density and spice.
