2022 D’Angelo, Aglianico del Vulture DOC, Basilicata

The D’Angelo estate is widely recognized as one of the founding pillars of modern winemaking in Basilicata, a rugged region in Southern Italy. Established in the 1930s in the village of Barile, this historic family property was instrumental in putting the Aglianico del Vulture appellation on the international wine map. The estate's vineyards are planted on the eastern slopes of Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano whose unique geography shapes the character of the fruit. D’Angelo remains committed to a traditional philosophy, focusing almost exclusively on native varieties and utilizing long aging regimens to tames the natural intensity of the local grapes.

The 2022 Aglianico del Vulture is a classic expression of the variety, demonstrating how volcanic soils can impart structural power alongside a distinct savory complexity. Following a manual harvest in October, the fruit undergoes traditional fermentation with native yeasts in cement vats, followed by a short maceration period. The wine is then moved to traditional large oak casks where it rests for nearly twenty months to soften its muscular framework. The 2022 vintage highlights the dual nature of Aglianico, presenting a structured, firm palate that remains balanced by a surprising core of freshness and dark, mineral-inflected fruit.

Why You’ll Love it

  • This is a textbook example of volcanic red wine, offering an authentic taste of Southern Italy's most celebrated and historic black grape.

  • The 2022 vintage achieves a great balance between its dark, concentrated fruit profile and a lively thread of natural acidity.

  • The nose is highly complex, bursting with black cherries, wild fennel, dried prunes, Mediterranean garrigue, and a distinct hint of volcanic ash.

  • On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied with firm, structured tannins that frame a savory finish accented by notes of sandalwood and dark spices.

  • It offers exceptional value and immense aging potential, capable of evolving beautifully over the next decade as the tannins become more silken.

How To Serve It

  • Serve this red at a cool room temperature between 60°F and 64°F to keep its robust structure and savory aromatics in perfect harmony.

  • We recommend decanting the wine for at least 45 minutes to an hour to allow the muscular tannins to yield and open up the earthy bouquet.

  • Use a large-bowled Bordeaux glass to capture the intense aromas and properly direct the rich liquid across your palate.

  • This wine screams for rich, rustic dishes such as slow-roasted lamb with sweet peppers, wild boar ragù, or pasta tossed with earthy mushrooms.
