2022 Clos Mogador, Priorat, Gratallops

To own a bottle of Clos Mogador is to possess a piece of vinous history. Born from the shattered black slate known as “llicorella” in the hallowed village of Gratallops, this is the "Golden Standard" of Priorat. The newly released 2022 Clos Mogador is a liquid monument to the 1979 revolution led by the visionary René Barbier. Having carried the wisdom of Burgundy and Bordeaux to these jagged terraces, Barbier’s legacy now continues through his family, transitioning the estate into a vanguard of regenerative biodynamic farming.

For those who gravitate toward the finest Bordeaux or the Northern Rhône, this is your mandatory collection detour; however, with our allocation being strictly limited, we recommend securing your bottles immediately to avoid missing this landmark vintage.

We tasted the 2022 at a trade event this past February, and it is setting up beautifully. It is a "baby" in the best sense—vibrating with energy where 80-year-old Garnacha and rugged Cariñena meet terror-driven power. The accolades speak to a relentless pursuit of perfection; since 2010, this cuvée has consistently earned 94 points or higher from The Wine Advocate. As Luis Gutiérrez, the publication’s Spanish specialist, noted of the estate’s evolution: "the wines are more elegant and have more finesse than ever," a sentiment that rings true in this vintage’s incredible polish.

For the ardent collector of old-vine intensity, the 2022 captures the "harsh" beauty of the hills—the bitingly cold winters and the furnace of the Catalan summer—transmuting them into a wine of immense grace. It stands as the heartbeat of the "Priorat Revolution," a wine that sings of broken slate and blue-black fruit. This is not just a bottle for the cellar; it is a spiritual connection to the 12th-century monks of Scala Dei who first braved these slopes. Salut!

Critical Acclaim:

Robert Parker Wine Advocate Logo

97 Points, Wine Advocate:

"Their single-vineyard 2022 Clos Mogador, their flagship wine, was produced with a blend of grapes, mostly Garnacha and Cariñena but also some Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (less and less, as they are regrafting most of them). It has a very Mediterranean nose with plenty of dry hay and straw notes, the classical wet slate notes, very Priorat too, and it has a round palate and very fine, chalky tannins. It's serious and harmonious and feels relaxed, without any excess.” - Luis Gutiérrez, May 2025

96 Points, Tim Atkin, Master of Wine:

“A deep, soulful sort of wine. Graphite, dark earth and smoke contribute to the savoury characters here, though there's no shortage of ripe, dark fruits. Chalky, firm and gently floral. This will need some time to come out of its shell but the material is all there. Excellent!”
